Will CB650Z exhaust fit CB650SC?
« on: October 17, 2013, 11:27:35 AM »
Good morning everyone,

I have been considering purchasing a Bassani exhaust system from one of the other members on this forum.

The exhaust was purchased for the CB650Z. I have a 79 CB650 chassy with an 82 CB650SC engine. I'm not too worried about the chassy as I can make that work if need be - but my question is - Will an exhaust from a CB650Z fit the head of an 82 CB650SC?

Thanks,

Did the port spacing on the SOHC 650's change over time? If its a SOHC4 650 exhaust it should fit the engine fine. Whether it fits on the frame is a different question.

Hi Bankerdanny,

That's a good question. I was hoping someone could shed some light on that question too...
I've read about differences between cb550 cb650 and cb750 but not much material or info on differences between cb650z and cb650sc models specifically

What year was the exhaust for? I know you say the Z, which is not a model sold in the US, but it appears that model was sold at the same time as the versions sold in the US. I would bet (but can't say for sure) that all SOHC4 650 engines have the same basic head.

According the this page here: http://www.myhonda650.com/cb650history.htm
A CB650Z was manufactured between Jan 79 and Dec 79. It also mentions briefly there MIGHT be changes among the 650 heads.

The exhaust I'm looking at is listed as 79-82 but doesnt specify whether it is for the standard or custom models

Based on the article it seems like the changes might have been on the intake side only to accommodate the change in carb styles.

Not a lot of 650 owners around, so you may not get the info you need and the only option might be to take a flyer on the exhaust and see how it works.

The port spacing on the exhaust side is the same on the Z as the SC.  The intake changed.  The exhaust off the Z will fit the chassis of the SC. You need to modify the brackets at the rear a little.  The exhaust off the SC won't fit the Z the side stand fouls on the LH pipe.  I have both in my shed and had a weekend a while ago where I had nothing better to do than see if I could fit the 4-4 onto the Z ;D.

Thought I'd report back my findings. I purchased the exhaust and it fits the bike fine. The only issue (a minor one) is that the headers rub on the oil filter housing as I have an oil cooler installed on mine. The oil cooler plate protrudes the housing out about an inch. The bottom of the outside fins are what's rubbing so I think I'm going to grind away a little bit of material to prevent further contact.

Here is a picture, and it is a Bassani race exhaust...
