550 motor into 500 frame?
« on: November 01, 2013, 03:58:07 AM »
Hi guys. Tried the search but didn't throw up any definitive answers, so I'll ask directly. Is the 550 motor into a 500 frame a straight swap? Might have the opportunity to pick up a fairly complete 500, but the motor is seized. There's also a running 550 motor going from another source, and I thought I might be able to combine the two?

cheers
ian

Should not be a problem to put a 550 into a 500

You need one 550 specific engine bracket on the RH side that has a guide/holder for the clutch cable and the 550 specific clutch cable. Other than that, everything else is the same.
If you look closely in this pic, it is the unpainted bracket just in front of the kicker. It should be left unpainted or grind off a spot where it touches the frame, as the ground cable attaches with the same bolt.

also the type one carbs you have on your 500 use them if the 550 your looking at has the later pd carbs, the first 550s were exactly that,a 550 in the 500 frame, heres those brackets side by side.
