Bike Title Thread
« on: May 20, 2005, 03:54:04 AM »
morning,

I live in Massachusetts, and I'm trying to get my bike registered. the problem is, It's Block/Frame ID's  don't show up on MassRMV records. I found the frame, rear wheel and engine in a scrap heap behind a cycle shop in Lenox, MA, and was allowed to take it away for free last November.

so I've been told that I must have the bike taken to the closest (westfield MA) state Police post that does those sort of inspections for a salvage title. I've also been told that I should bring along all receipts related to the refurbishing of my bike, and of course $50 dollars.

does this sound right?

any Mass riders, or Dr. Frankenstein creators that can shed some light on how to get a creation out of the garage and onto the street--legally?

I'm interested too - I want to find an "orphaned" bike and make it whole again...so if anyone in Colorado can explain the process I'd appreciate it.

But now that Bronco Bike is "sick" I'm thinking those nice shiny new bikes (that most likely RUN) look awfully good right now...and Dear Hubby 's patience with BB is running low.  He has nightmares of me broke down in the mountains! alone!!

Hymodyne, I'm down here in Rhode Island and any vehicle over 10 years old does not require a title, only a bill of sale.  I bought a '71 Dart Swinger from Holyoke, MA and the RI registry did not even look at the MA title, only the bill of sale.  Also, I bought my old CB750 and again, I only needed a bill of sale.

in nc, you have to get a indeminity bond for the bike, like 100 bucks and then take the finished bike to the dmv and they will issue a new title... id say 50 bucks isnt bad...

In NY they charge $125.00  Since you got the bike for "free" $ 50 isn't bad.

When i did it here in ohio, I spoke with 3 title offices and got 3 different answers as to what I HAD to do to get a title, 2 of which turned out to be options( I made the second call because the first lady told me I HAD to find the previous title to get a title trasfer). The first option was a salvage title situation with inspections ect.... However the second,(which I have employed twice now), required that I do an online title search for the vehicle(which I did not have to prove?!), write up an affidavit explaining how I obtained, and what i intend to do with the bike(maybe, ride- it big bro), have my notary friend notorize it, take it to my courthouse, pay my (100 large)  have the judge sign it, then take it to the title agengy, pick up my new clean ohio title, walk next door to the licence agency, pay another $50, and walk out with historical plates that I don't have to renew for 48 years.... I has all worked out well,(exept for the $150..   twice

It may be worth a few calls, this type of thing has happend to me again since, with a differnt govt buracracy, and different subject...

Hymodyne,
Take it from a fellow Mass-Hole, find a friend in NH or RI have them register the bike in their name in their state without a title. Then in a few weeks, one of our neighboring states issues your friend a brandy-new title, then they "sell" it to you, with the new title you pay your $110 at the Mass. registry, receive your new plates, and in 4-5 weeks receive your new Mass. title.
Believe me, there is nothing in the world less understanding than a registry employee. BTW, if you don't have a friend in NH or RI, pay ITS $100 and they do the same thing: in 3-5 weeks, you'll receive a bill of sale and signed-over reg. from either GA or ME, which you can take to the registry. As long as you know the vehicle isn't stolen, don't feel guilty about not following the letter of the law, Not that I would tell you to do something ilegal. ::)

I am a MA resident too.  My neighbor gave me a CB500 basket case (parts bike) with no title this fall.  I spent the winter bringing it back to life.  I used International Title Service (its-titles.com) to get a title from a state which does not require a title for registration for old machines.  For a bike 1980 or older it cost $75. All required forms are available from the web site.   I got a Georgia registration and documentation stating that Georgia did not require or provide a title for old machines.  The MA registration people balked a little because there was not a certified mileage but gave me a MA registration.  It is necessary to provide a notarized statement that you own the bike and that you transfer the ownership to ITS.  They register the machine in a state which does not require a title and then transfer the machine back to you.  It works and it is legal.

Good luck.

I used ITS to title my '78 CB550, too (and a CM200T). Here in Florida, it's a complete mess if you have a bike with no title. I even went to the DMV with the orginal owner and they still wouldn't title it for me. ITS was the only way. You also need to bring the bike with you to the DMV or have the vin inspected by a cop for out-of-state bike registrations (Georgia by ITS). It worked on two bikes at the same time.

I'm going to use them again for an '84 Honda Shadow 500 I bought over the weekend for $100. For a newer bike, ITS charges $125.

Haven't got a title. How can I remedy this situation?
« Reply #12 on: June 17, 2005, 11:38:38 AM »
I've got about 50 more questions lined up, but I'm trying to space them out so you don't get too sick of me :p

Pretty to the point, got this 1972 bike, and no title.  All I do have is a pink registration paper from, oh, 1983.   I can get a "bill of sale" (bikes were free for the towing) from the previous owner, however.

How can I get the dang thing registered under my own name?  I'm pretty sure it varies state-to-state, right?  this would be in New Mexico FWIW.

Thanks, couldn't find a service by that name, but I did find another company in AL, Broadway Title Co.  $100. sigh. I wish there were some rhyme or reason to the fact that only 2 (?) states in the country have provisions in place for untitled vehicles.  So ridiculous.

Here in michigan, all I have to do is have a police officer come over, run the VIN fill out a paper, send it in, and then the Secretary of State sends me a new title in my name.

call the DMV and Highway Patrol. Usually one or both can make provisions. In California when I had a bike made from parts they kicked the tires, put a plate on the frame, and I got a title. This IS a state by state thing, though.

Problem getting a bike title
« Reply #17 on: July 04, 2005, 09:43:22 PM »
I was given a 1977 550K from someone that just wanted it off their property. It was left behind by the previous owner of the house but he didn't leave the title with it and he can't be located anymore. Any ideas how I can get a title for this bike?   I live in PA.
Thanks

You should be able to go to your local DOT. If the bike was left then it is free and clear especially if it has been a couple of years since it was registered. You may need something from the person who gave you the bike. Just contact your Dept of Transportation.

Getting a title (I know it's an old question, but please have a look)
« Reply #19 on: August 03, 2005, 03:20:05 AM »
You know, I have my newly acquired CB350 with no title. Went to the Broadway Title Service webpage and they say they can't register bikes for the moment. Another one is International Title Service (www.its-titles.com). Does anybody have experience with this one? Or can anybody recommend me another one?

Regards

Raul

Probably you mean Broadway Title Service, that are located in Alabama. Are those the ones you were talking about?

I've used ITS maybe 4 or 5 times. No problems on my end, but that being said, some people choose to use these service for less than legal reasons, and when they do, the company also gets in trouble. That's possibly the reason Broadway is temporarily closed. Each time I've used a title company, I've worried that they'll go out of business with my $100 before I get my paperwork from them. But of course, that could happen with any business, I guess.

No problems with ITS then? Actually Broadway Title is not closed; they only say they can't register bikes right now, but they can register any other vehicle.
