Re: Title trouble in Illinois......any advise would help
« Reply #150 on: May 14, 2007, 08:13:31 AM »
Just spoke with a buddy of mine with the highway patrol here in Illinois to do a VIN check.  Luckily it's not stolen and further more he told me that transfer of an open title, which is what this bozo did, is a felony in IL and that if the guy doesn't fit it I can turn him into the Iowa sheriffs office.  I hope that changes his outlook.

Has anyone ever used this service or can recommend a title service? Before I put time and money in my 1966 Suzuki X6 Hustler , want to get a title. Website shows forms to complete and send (with $85) they will create a title and sell it to you.

Do a forum search and you will find lots of posts about them -all good if my memory serves me-. I have used them for my CB350 title here in Spain -I will have to make an import and pay customs, but it was the only way....-

Does it make any difference? If you get an out-of-state title and a bill of sale, you should be able to register your bike in any state, at least that's what it seems to me.

Please help understanding my CB350 title
« Reply #155 on: September 07, 2007, 02:20:10 PM »
My CB350 restoration is almost finished and now starts the drudgery of the registration in the spanish DMV. I got the title via ITS, and they sent me the registration receipt and the signed bill of sale. Problem is that the signature in them is not the same.

I know this can give me trouble if I have the "luck" to be served by a less-than-brilliant clerk, so I have no trouble if I "misteriously" get another bill of sale with the right signature in it.

None of them can really be understood, so my question is: the registration in the title, is from the owner, or from the one who go to the DMV and make the payment? Who is "Susan" in the registration paper? The clerk?

As the bike is registered to a company, I hope I'm not asked for a notarized authorization of the signer by the company. What is the right way to express that you are signing in your company name? B.A.? (by appointment?)

The bike is registered to Specialty Title Service.  As long as the Bill of Sale and the Registration say the same, you should be fine (just did this myself and everything worked fine, even with the different signatures, but mine was here in the states in IL).

My guess is that the address and stuff in the lower right corner is the county clerk.  Susan may be the cashier that handled the paperwork.  I would think that CBrown is the owner who was authorized to sign by Specialty Market Place.

All the other questions, I don't have the foggiest  ???

Is your question answered Raul?  Yo confío en que Ud. no sufrirá ningún inconveniente por la demora en la entrega del material.

Those words you wrote are perfectly combined together, but they smell "this guy is not from here" from everywhere   ;D

I'm just going to write a new bill of sale, fake the signature, and order a "Specialty Market Place" stamp. For some strange reasons, stamped documents over here give an impression of "officiality" that regular signed documents don't.

What pisses me off is that, like in the US, the different provinces have different DMV's and in some of them the only thing you need as a proof of ownership is to go to a notary public with two good man and sign an affidavit stating the bike is yours. This ITS route is longer and more expensive, but as long as you are willing to pay custom duties, nobody would really care whose the bike is.

It's only inmoral if you falsify in order not to pay. Actually, I'm going the other way round. I'm being unlawful in order to pay custom duties, VAT, purchase taxes, registration fees etc.

Does Illinois accept Bill of Sale from Non-title state?
« Reply #164 on: December 27, 2007, 04:46:15 PM »
I picked up a 1974 Honda from a guy at a swap meet who didn't have the title. Before paying the guy, I ran the VIN # by the  local PD and they informed me that the bike was clear. I then contracted broadway title in AL for a title search. They mailed me a bill of sale and tax/registration receipt.

Will the state of IL accept the bill of sale and this receipt without a title?

Thanks!

R.

Yo man,

As far as I know you will be cool.
Just expect a few weeks before you get your "new" title..
The green CB450 had a "lost" title when I bought it, took almost 6 months to sort it out with the state...

I had my title a week after I went to the DMV following getting a bill of sale and last registration from ITS.  I got my plate for my 750 that same day.  You should have no issues.

Question on an open title, how to go about this properly
« Reply #169 on: August 17, 2008, 03:49:02 PM »
So I'm checking out a 350F tomorrow that the seller says has an open title from Michigan...I was reading another thread here about someone that had a similar situation - how would you guys suggest I approach this? I'm located in North Carolina, so is the bike. I wasn't planning on registering it right away anyway, but I'm not going to hand over money if it's not legal to transfer title without proper documentation from the PO.

The current owner does a lot of selling of vintage Honda parts on Ebay, is a long-time member so I would think he wouldn't risk that by selling something stolen, but anything's possible I guess.

Thanks for any help.

not a problem......I have a couple of open titles on bikes I have from other states....if you're in NC and buy from someone in NC....if you buy from someone in NC, you have to go throught the whole (both people sign the title in front of a notary)...when buying from out of state, I just get the seller to sign the title and that's it.....if I go get tags and registration for it, just sign the out of state title at the tag office.......you can just get the title in your name without getting tags and registration for it.......pretty simple............the seller would just hand over the open title to you....but  make sure you get a bill of sale just as proof you bought it...........hope this helps.............

North Carolina is one of the strictest states as far as crossing T's and dotting i's.  Very strict.  My last buy from Arizona was a nightmare.  Take the time and have the guy with the bike put it in his name.  He's either being cheap or lazy- or both.  I just don't trust open titles from out of state anymore.  For instance; what if he got a title that looks good, but the previous owner owes taxes or fines, tickets, etc.

Just what do you mean by an "open" title?? No title?  Clear title, ie, no lein on it?
A good bike mechanic only needs two tools, WD40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move, but should, use the WD40. If it does move but shouldn't use the duct tape.

An open title is where the current owner pre-signs it for release.  In North Carolina your signature has to be notarized by the DMV.  Banks can notarize the transfer, but they won't do it unless their notary witnesses the simultaneous signing by the seller AND the buyer. Presumably the buyer takes it to HIS DMV and has the title transferred to his name.  Occasionally, a buyer will decide to save money and not transfer the title if he plans on doing some work and turning the bike over.

I bought a bike last year from a guy in Arizona who told me he had the title in hand.  Silly me- it was from the guy HE bought it from and there were leagal issues because the title was actually owned by a trust or estate or something.  It took 9 more months to get a clear title.

PS;  In North Carolina, you can not transfer a title and get a registration / plate without proof of insurance.  Notary fee is $7 CASH ONLY in additon to any taxes and fees.
