Funny thing is, we're such a bunch of nice, mostly mellow, helpful, loyal, cry-over-stray-kittens folks.  Just look at the threads where folks need help or moral support.  Of course, those same nice qualities don't allow for %#*&ING FOLKS!.

Really pretty simple.  Can't we all just get along?  ;D

Wow.  That's all I can say about that topic.  I'd post his info, but I don't want a harassment lawsuit on my hands.  Being pretty new to this forum I think I underestimated you folks.  ;D

Here in OR, you would have the person who lost the title fill out an application for lost title. Then you, the buyer, would take that, your own application for title and the bill of sale to the DMV. The DMV would reissue in the computer the PO's title, then make a title with the transfer info to your name and you'd get it in the mail in about a month. The PO would have to put his phone # on (and it should be in their records anyway from the registration) and contact him to confirm you bought it. You would end up paying for both titles but you'd get it in the end without much fuss.

I would call the DMV and find out what you can do in your state. Never assume you know how that system works. They may be able to help you out. Otherwise, I say let Firecracker at 'em.  ;D

I hate to give up my reputation as a... whatever, but if you really pay attention to the Brimmer thread, you'll see that Seaweb did at least as much as I did, and probably more.

I had a similar thing happen to me in the 70s. I bought a Triumph chop off a guy who was moving to Florida but he left before I paid him all the money. So I had a title but with a lein on it. That meant that I could not sell the bloody thing! I sent a registered letter to his last known address in Florida and after a waiting period I was issued a new title. What I had done was to show that I had made every effort to contact the PO with no success. I don't know what you can do with no title whatsoever. I have a CB350F with no title either, bought off a "friend" who assured me that he had the title but can't find it. It will probably be used as a parts bike for my other CB350F, as it has no title and a siezed motor.

i say go to DMV and ask them what you need to do. there is always a way if you have the bill of sale and make an effort to contact the person, you just need proof of the effort.

Advice from a New Jersey member needed
« Reply #214 on: June 09, 2009, 10:48:38 AM »
I have bought a bike over in the US which is being kept at my daughters home in NJ. She will put the title in her name but has been told she will need to insure it first before it can be transfered, she hasn't got a motorcycle licence just a car one. Is there any way around this? Any comments or advice are welcome.

I realize you wanted a NJ opinion so sorry for weighing in but I thought I would throw this out there....here in Ont we can apply for an ownership as unfit. This means you get an ownership but it can not be plated until it passes a safety inspect and proof of insurance is shown. Any chance soomething of that nature is available?

Thanks for that Dennis, yes that is the kind of thing I was hoping for, will see if it is available in NJ. I do know NJ has a Safety Inspection system so it seems a logical idea.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but you don't need a motorcycle endorsement on your license in order to title a bike, you only need it to operate said bike on non-private land...heck you don't need a license to insure it either.

At least not here in Nebraska, I know you asked about NJ specifically.

OK the licence was just an added bit of information. All I really need is to transfer the title as cheaply as possible, hopefully insure as and when it is ready to run.

The laws are fairly consistant across the States to allow people to register their vehicles when they relocate from one State to another. You will need proof of insurance to register the bike. There are small insurance brokers near most DMV offices where you can pick up a 6 month policy from some no name Company pretty cheaply.

Oh I gotcha now, what's the current condition of the title?  salvaged?  from another US state?  If she has a car insurance policy, I'd ask her carrier if they also insure bikes and add the bike to the policy.  It was only like 80 bucks for a year to add my CB350 with minimal insurance.

From http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/Motorcycles.htm

To title or register your motorcycle, visit an MVC Agency with proof of insurance, title and registration fee payment and one of the following:
Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MSO or MCO)
New Jersey or out-of-state title
Registration and a notarized bill-of-sale from the previous owner with vehicle description and sale price (motorcycles from non-titled states only)

No problem, she has to ask for Title transfer, pay the sales tax and they will issue Title in her name. If she is not registering the bike she does not need insurance, only the original Title.

thanks for that cb650PK I will tell her.
Chester345 sorry I didn't reply to your post we have a NJ title from a previous owner, the last owner didn't appear to transfer to his name, the title shows it has done something like 80 miles in that time.
