the Nortons are here..
« on: September 02, 2013, 08:35:59 PM »
Maybe not, but ran into this guy I had to track down as a Previous Previous owner who still had title, small world.

When we were sitting in line talking about how dangerous the 450 was with an extra foot of forks was and some guy had nortons and bla bla bla.

Anyway today I saw him and asked about the nortons,  said he knew the guy had no plan to work on them, exchanged numbers. Sounds like my bud has already seen them and prevented a craiglist crowd invited on the viewing.

Two '73 Commando 850 kickstart only . He's already seen them and if all goes well with negotiating he'll probably get them and go original because the controls and everything is there with just a bit rusty pipes on them.

Not getting too excited yet.

Got them for relatively cheapish. I didn't have the money or I would have got them.  They've been in Oklahoma since the beginning I think, being stored over twenty years ago, all stock. Titles in hand.  One may go to  Barber, might even get sold there.

Typical running when parked story. A guy got into his late '70s and finally sold them.Another guy had them since and he wasn't going to do anything with them. One is seized up, the other spins freely. I would assume they have been together since the dealership, I think he said the serial numbers are within 20 or thirty apart.

Hot twins, yes.

Far from original paint on my bike.  When i bought it, it was old ugly and tired but mechanically sound.  So I stripped it, painted it and spent a lot of hours polishing it.  It looks nice but there are far nicer Nortons out there.

From the factory mine was a Hi Rider and was purple.  If youve never seen a hi rider, look it up.  It looks like a Huffy with a motor.  It may have been cool in the 70s but there was now way I was going to keep it like that.

So things are getting sorted out with these bikes. Basicly they are barnfind gold like you hear about.  Stored inside, titles, both motors roll over nicely and appear to have compression. Mostly unmolested on both, one has original pipes, the other has what look like JC Whitney shorties. Story is the guy quit riding them when he got up into his '70's.  They were evidently bought from the same shop, serial numbers withing about 40 or less of each other. Paired for life up to this point. One had a brittle oil feeder to the head that snapped , so after rolling the motor over it was a good indicator that it has oil and pumps it.

The other has a problem with the oil tank draining down into the motor, but likewise it turns over and has compression.

Oil draining down into the motor - Add an anti sump valve in the line.  Most Norton riders have them.

We're in Oklahoma.  I had to hunt down a PO's PO for a title on another bike and he mentioned these. I say him out of a crowd and remembered face and his last name and asked about the bikes. He said they were in his friend's garage and ready to go away. The deal went down within a day or two.

The chrome on them seems like it would clean up well, and they seem to have been garaged all their lifes,. The serial numbers are within eight numbers and both have about the same miles, about 15 k I think.

You can see a mirror like reflection in the chrome where the dust is scrubbed away.
