1978 CB550 EPA sticker? Help!
« on: November 04, 2013, 02:10:47 PM »
Hey there crew,

I just got my bike on the road and all registered with the California DMV. Unfortunately a few days later all my paper work came back to me and it said it was canceled because there was never a EPA sticker verification. The letter from the DMV said if I brought my bike in with the sticker they would reactivate my registration. Until I do this I basically can't ride the bike. Ive looked all over the parts I have removed from the bike and on the bike itself and can't find squat!

My questions for the collective are:

  • Can anyone post a photo or tell me where the original sticker was located?
  • Does anyone know where to get a replacement sticker or have a part with one on it I can buy/borrow until I get a visual check on this.

Thanks in advance.

I went out and scoured my California registered 78 CB550K.  And, I find no EPA sticker on it.  I don't believe there ever was one, and I find no place where it would have been.

I have a 79 CX500 that does have a sticker/plaque for EPA specs/ and settings pinned to the frame.

Almost certainly, DMV is just dicking you around.  Or, there have been some(more) recent law changes the Dems have put in place to make life more miserable for us and show us just who is boss.  Probably have to find a referee center and pay to slap some sense into DMV.

Make sure the bike is being registered as a 78 and not a 79.

I just cannot get out of Kalifornia fast enough.

They did not have EPA stickers at that time.
Considering the age of the motorcycle they should know better than to even ask you.

It just shows their ignorance.

Maybe it was a Republican clerk who thought the customer was a DEM and wanted to make life more miserable for him.

I never had an EPA sticker either in CA.  Just breezed right through.  They are messing with you. Some people prefer to go through AAA (if you have that) for all things DMV as they are kinder and gentler...

I paid the $50 sign up fee for AAA just to not have to go to the real dmv. The ones inside the AAA offices are lazy and generally extremely nice. They let me skate on things all the time.

Impossible that it was a republican screwing with a dem. don't you know Republicans want dirty air, starving babies and to throw grandma in to the streets. They definitely would not have asked him for a sticker... Besides, apart from Arnold, Dennis Miller and TT, there aren't any republicans remaining on the Left Coast.

Just MO

I'm on the west coast and am on charge of the 'pushing grandmas in the streets' division of the Republican Party.TT is definitely in charge of the starving babies.

I ran into the same issue when trying to register my '78. There may have been epa stickers on cars in 1978 but I still haven't seen one on a bike. Try using an independent registration service and see if you have better luck.

Thanks for all the replies! Sorry it took me a while to get out of the garage and back to a computer screen. From what I have seen on the DMV web the EPA law is for vehicles from '78 forward which is why I think they are giving me a hard time. The bike did have a previous California plates on it but both the VIN and plates were out of the system so I had to get it VIN verified at a local CHP office. I think the reason they are asking is to make sure the bike is a California EPA certified vehicle. Im thinking that Honda only made one model for this year and there were no 49/50 state specific models. If thats the case how do I tell that to the DMV people. So frustrating!!!!

Call American Honda in LA and ask them for a letter to give to the DMV.
End of problem.
