75 Honda GL1000 - What is a fair offer?
« on: October 23, 2013, 12:24:02 PM »
I have happened upon a 75 Goldwing GL1000.  I have not seen it yet but the seller sent me some pictures.  It has apparently been sitting in dry storage since 1999 and has not been running since then.  It has fairings and bags and supposedly the motor is not locked up and has less than 25,000 miles.  All the original parts are there and from the pictures appears to have minor to moderate rust (as to be expected).  I believe all the usual things will need re-done, new tires, carb rebuild, spokes replaced and some overall engine work (water pump, radiator, etc...at least).

So what is a fair price on this one?

Thanks!

I paid $950 for mine 2 years ago as a running (although poorly) bike.

For a non-runner in need of restoration, likely missing the original seat and grab rail and headlight assembly, $500-$700.

Throw up the pictures the seller sent you, that will also help up offer reasonably informed opinions

Definitely a '75 (the blue logo on the valve covers, they are black on all other years).

When you say all parts are there that means both side covers, the seat and the shelter sides (the sides of the false tank)? What about the radiator expansion tank, which should be under the right side of the shelter and appears to be missing. Is the storage tray under the flip up part of the shelter there?

Now that I see it I think $300-$500.

Passed on that one, got this one instead.  75 without Vetter Fairings and such.  Runs pretty good but needs a carb sync, belts already done, has new plugs but I plan to change all the fluids.  Don't like the seat so I will put on a replica original (at least it has the original grab bar).  Only 18,500 on the clock.  Tires are cheap Kendas but I will probably stay with them for now.  I will likely change bearings, spokes, fluids over the next few weeks and spend some time over the holidays cleaning it up.

So what do you think?

Always liked the naked wings,  actually got to set up and test ride the first one that came to our dealership back in the day. Hit a ton without realizing it ;)  What'd you have to give for that?  Seems to be in good condition other than the fugly seat...Larry

Excellent. If it runs as good as it looks and has the original engine and carbs, I personally would have paid a few thousand for it.

It has original engine from what I can tell, engine serial # is very close to bike VIN #, built 3/75, does not ever appear to have had fairings on it.  Only thing I can find that is not original is the seat - original grab bar is there and I paid just over $1K!  I knew I had a deal (title included!).  Will tune it up really good the next couple of months and have it ready for spring.  Will probably buy a replica seat from David Silvers.

+1 on fugly even if it's not in ripped up condition

They look good with a regular flat seat like they came with.

qman, nice looking and really good shape naked 75 Wing. By the pic looks original except for that seat of course ;D Much better then the first one you were looking at. Post some more pics of it!!

I have a black all original 77 Wing that I got in April with 9200 miles on it. But I didn't I didn't come out as cheap as you did. I had to come off the hip $2000 before loading it on the trailer. About $500 over what I wanted to pay for a naked Wing, but just couldn't walk away from this Gem.

Had looked at a loaded 1975 (fairing, bags, the works and could of got it for $1500. But had several non original parts. But what made me walk away was after checking #'s found out there had been a engine swap sometime in the bike's life and instead of the original motor their was a 77 engine sitting in the frame.

I did notice some water seeping from under the engine - very minor but I think this means I need a water pump rebuild.  Since it probably needs new coolant anyway I will make this my first maintenance item (I also understand I need silica free coolant).  Any other suggestions will be much appreciated!

Been lazy and haven't got my on the road yet, but sitting in the garage my w/pump drips a few drops of coolant at times. When I get it on the hwy if it gets worst of course I'll have to put a new pump on. I flushed and cleaned out my radiator and so their wouldn't be any question of what to use I went back with the factory Honda 50/50 blend coolant.

Nice. Mine is Antares Red, but I have always been partial to that particular blue.
