Destination Arizona
« on: November 05, 2013, 03:39:19 pm »
So, it's looking more and more like I'll be moving to Arizona.  High interest in Prescott area, (and Chino Valley has a nice RC airfield).
I've been trying to decipher what vehicle registration and testing requirements my fleet of vehicles is going to require, or if I'm soon to have a fire sale on SOHC4s.  It doesn't seem straightforward or obvious from online searches.

I *think* being outside Phoenix and Tucson, means no annual emission test.  But, is there still an annual vehicle inspection for each one?

Just seems odd that none of my bikes or my 72 ford truck need a smog test in Cal, but just might in AZ.

Any help or relevant pointers you might provide will be appreciated.

Hey Lloyd, there is no smog testing required in Yavapai County. To register your vehicles in AZ, the MVD will require an inspection and verification of the VIN; that's it.

Thanks.

Is the inspection a yearly thing thereafter?  Certificate required?  Fees above what registration mandates?

No, the inspection of the VIN is a one-time thing: they just make sure the CA title is indeed for the bike or car before they issue an AZ title. AZ does enforce a mandatory insurance policy; if you cancel the insurance, they cancel your registration.

CAL does the same.

The roads north out of Prescot Valley through Ash Fork and up to I-40 west of Flagstaff are some of the best twisties I've ever seen.  Awesome views there ,too.

Welcome. Come on over. Stop for coffee on your way if taking I-40. (drop off a couple of bikes too.)

We spent few days last July in the area South of Flagstaff before travelling to Grand Canyon.  I would move to Arizona in a heartbeat, especially after last Tuesday in VA  :(

Flag, Snow Flake and Pine Top have nice Summers but nasty Winter with plenty of Snow. I think Flag broke a record in snowfall a couple of years ago. Gotten very expensive to live in Flag over the years.

Phoenix, Tucson is a rat race. My area has beautiful Winters, nasty Summers.

Electricity is high as well as License plate fees if you buy a newer car. Can't speak for taxes on property but I always think mine are high.

I do like the Cottonwood area and if moving from here would be my first choice. Sedona is beautiful but pricey and full of tourists.

I would also say Sedona has high concentration of nut cases, based on what I seen there - soul and spirit searchers, but that's just my biased opinion :)

Apart from the climate and terrain, I'd have to agree.  It's a cryin' shame really.

I haven't yet investigated Cottonwood.  But, I will.

I toured Arizona 2-3 years ago with and eye toward relocating.  Already knew to avoid Phoenix and Tuscon due to the heat, (same reason to avoid Texas (btw).  I gotta keep the Wife happy and she detests heat (SF raised).

My focus then was on Payson and spent a week checking the area.   We used the next week to check out Sedona, and then briefly Prescott.
Sedona is pretty touristy (and expensive), so the vibe is "everyone is a transient".  Oddly no one seems to really take ownership and pride for the very beautiful area.  They also had a flash flood that went right through town.  Which no one seemed to know how to deal with, (or care).
If people show their true nature under bad conditions, the people in Sedona did not make any sort of favorable impression during that event, even the emergency crews.

When we got to Prescott, we were sorry we couldn't spend the same amount of time we used to evaluate the Payson area.  The worst we could say about it was that it didn't have a California bay area climate. But, that was to be expected, really.

More later.  I need to go finish the shop roof renovation.

That is one reason for the attraction to Prescott.

Winters can get cold at night.  But, I don't think there is ground freeze.  Still need to learn more.  But, slab on grade seems pretty common for houses.  I don't think you can do that where the ground freezes.
