CB550 / CB650 Cam Swap issues
« on: November 05, 2013, 07:02:46 PM »
I have a 1977 CB550 that I am putting a 1982 Cb650 cam in.

When I put the rocker cover on something is hitting and stops the cam from turning.

When the rocker cover is off it turns freely, it's just when the cover is on that this happens.

I have heard some people need to grind part of the rocker cover when this happens with this mod.

Any ideas / thoughts?

I'm not even sure where or what it is hitting in there.

I'm using the 550 sprocket and cam chain, it's just the cam I have swapped.

Clean inside of cover, apply red grease to rockers, assemble,  rotate, disassemble,  look for red grease inside cover. This will tell you where and about how large a patch is contacting and give you a starting point to remove material IF removing material from the cover is what you're supposed to do to remedy this.

place the cam in the head with out the chain or cover and turn it,sometimes the lobes foul the head, turn the cover upside down and place the cam in it and turn it holding the rocker heels against the lobe, sometimes they foul on the underside of the rockers.
