Can someone verify this seal, and damping rod question
« on: November 03, 2013, 06:04:27 PM »
Howdy,
making progress on one of the forks today.
I got a little mallet happy when i was placing the new fork seal into the lower.
I only realized the position when i compared it to the other one.

Should i pull it out, and order new new seals? or just let it be?
Part 2.
in this rebuild guide
http://www.motorcycleclassics.com/mc-how-to/honda-cb500-fork-rebuild.aspx#axzz2jddSFKow

In the second object to the top there is this long damping rod that goes inside the tube. I did not find them on my 72' CB500? Should i attempt to source them, anyone else find this?
Thanks! :D

if it went in easy and you didnt use sealant around it you might carefully and evenly pry/lever it out again and reuse it?if you damage it your up for a new seal anyway,id give it a go.

Only the early 500's have the long rod, the later ones the damper assembly will not slide out of the bottom as there is a collar welded into the steel fork tube
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Usually you have to tap the seal down until it bottoms on the shoulder in the slider, as you have done, and in it's seated position the top of the seal is just below the clip groove. I have not seen one before where there is such a gap between the seal and the clip, which leads me to wonder if you have the correct seal?

It's been a long time since I've had my 750 forks apart, perhaps someone can verify?

Don't worry about it.
It will not be a problem.

The seal does not bottom out on anything.

Its a K&S fork seal NO 16-1020
 • 35mm x 48mm x 11mm

I think the placement on the one i just did was off, and too far deep I don't think ill be able to pull it out without damaging it....

Well that's the correct seal according to my parts list, so I guess that's how they fit. Sorry if I confused the issue. Personally I'd still have it sitting on that shoulder though, at least you know it's in square that way.

That's the damper - part #51430-323-020. That part and everything else on that towel belongs in all CB500K '71-'73.  But it sounds like someone swapped CB550 forks into your bike. If so, just leave it be. The dampers won't work with the CB550 forks.

I have put them in both ways and it seems to make no difference.
They can be all the way down on the shoulder or flush with the top.
I have never felt any difference.

thanks lucky!
Now i just need to figure out what i want to do with the headlamp ears, then get these forks back on.

AHH i find more and more surprises from this bike, is there any other badging that i can look, and confirm that its a 550 set?

I just realized that the picture came off a website and isn't your parts. Have a look at the 550 pic below. If your fork tubes look like this (groove around bottom of chrome tube) and the top nut isn't threaded underneath to attach the damper rod, you have 550 forks.
