My 32 gallon oxalic acid pipe dip.
« on: November 10, 2013, 05:13:46 pm »

Then 24 hours later - flip.

Really doing a good job. I've got small rusty parts like the frilly pipe clamps and the pegs on strings suspended in there too.

If you're in central jersey and you want to dip your pipes before I spill this stuff out come on by.

I have used oxalic acid in my old furniture refinishing business to remove water stains from wood but did not know it was a de-ruster also. Did you get it in the crystal powder form and mix it with water ?

Stirring it up I wanted to say "boil, bubble, toil and trouble" or whatever they say. Stuff works really well though. I'm thinking, I've got really rusty rims and spokes I think I could get a wheel in there one at a time.

I bought 5 lbs of the stuff in white powder form off ebay. $20 shipped free.

How should you dispose of something like that?

You're not supposed to ask that.  ;)

Neutralize it with a base then down the drain?  Curious myself.

I'm not a greenie by any stretch, I remember 'recycling' old oil by pouring out the container along the side of the garage and I've used that method for anti-freeze now and then lately.

But still, dumping 32 gallons of toxic acid anywhere but an actual chemical recycling site is more irresponsible than I can be any more.

I bet it easily neutralizes, not super strong because anybody can buy it easily. May be drain safe I would have to look it up

Just because it is acid doesn't always mean it is some real bad stuff

Baking soda neutralizes it, I had a feeling it would. Get a big bit and use any leftover for low buck soda blasting

I haven't actually looked up an MSDS on it but so far from what I've read it's not all that much more acidic than vinegar or lemon juice depending on how strong you mix it and baking soda does a good job at neutralizing it and from that point you can just dump it down the drain.

Edit- you beat me to it bj

Yes, It's safe for drains. It's a lot weaker than fruit acid like ascorbic and citric/malic. And the only thing added now is the rust that dissolved off. I'm gonna keep it around for a while, sealed with the lid. I figure it'll come in handy for the whole restore.
