CL450 gas tank on 78 cb750k
« on: November 07, 2013, 03:13:13 PM »
Just finished notching the frame to fit the back of the cl450 tank. Now it looks like the petcock will hit my carb.

Looking for the simplest solution, I'm thinking blocking this off and welding a new bung. Have a mig but don't trust myself doing this, tank is dry/rusty inside.

Got a picture of your frame?

Rough cuts done with a cut off wheel. Had to shave over 1/2" off both sides of frame. I'll be welding flat bar back in place.

could you get a right angle fitting on there and run an inline fuel tap?

Is there such a thing as an inline petcock? This way I can run a fuel hose right off the tank bung.

You can get inline petcock and filters at ace hardware in their mower section. I always thought about plugging a 450 and using the equalizer tubes.  Might have problems when low on fuel.

Does that one have a filler on the side or in the middle?  It looks like it's not all beat to heck.

The filler cap is in the middle but yeah the tank is a 10 footer but not too bad at all for a 40 year old tank. This is off a 72-74? Cl450.

I'm still looking for decent shape pre 71 as the tank doesn't have an oval shape.

So easiest/cheapest solution is to run inline petcock but best solution would be relocate to retain reserve function.

Running fuel lines off both equalizer tubes could also work. Join them up at a T then fuel filter to carb.

Looking good. AS long as I'd been in the Honda shops I was told, Oh yeah, the CL450 tank fits right on.

Well, we both know that's not quite right. I figured if I ever got around to mounting mine, I'd modify the tank rather than the frame. I know a real good tank shop that could make one from scratch, so I think they can mod one to fit. I really like the look, though it does leave the tang showing between it and the seat. Unless you make the seat longer in the front. But if the look is for a lean bratty style, just leave it showing. FYI for those who may not know, the front rubber bumpers do fit right on and it appears the extension on the rear tang will fit the stock CB750 hold down rubber. But Dj can attest to that or no.

The look from above shows a lot of engine.   :D

It was easier/cheaper for me to modify the frame to fit. Love the look of this tank, reveals the engine alot more.

The rear cl450 rubber mount lines up with the cb750 frame.

I'm looking at a 75 cl360 tank right now, looks smaller and cap on the right side. Is it smaller then the 450 tank too? The rear tang seems larger.

I may try this tank out since the petcock is on the left side. maybe the simplest fix to my original problem.

the 360 tank will fit on the front mounts and is a little longer but still requires some work at the rear to sit right looks better imo than the tank you have. the earlier 450 tank is much nicer .you may still have petcock issues but there is no crossover fuel line to deal with.bill

The cl360 tanks I'm seeing have the crossover unless you mean cb?

I also prefer the look of the earlier cl450 tanks but harder to come by in decent condition. Don't really like the oval look of the late model

Actually I really like what you've done there DJ, that side-on pic is very reminiscent of an old Panther stroker which IMO is one of the best looking bikes ever. In fact the more I look at it, the more I like it :) Shame about the petcock issue, hope you figure a way round it.

There is. Inline petcocks they have little red handles. You can make a hose barb to fit the stock outlet , or plug that and use the crossover tubes.

Thanks! I'll figure out a way to make it work. Last resort would be to move the petcock for now. It's winter up here anyways do I've got a few months to figure something out.

Does anyone by chance know the thread pitch/size of the cl450 petcock?

Measure using wrenches..it will be METRIC, and use bolts you have around to measure the pitch.
 I am guessing 14 or 16 x 1.25...

There was / is a forum member that has a CB750 Turbo in blue, that uses a CL450 tank. Looked good, But I think he was running without frame tubes to make it work.

I don't know which was the reason for what. IF the tubes were cut to accommodate the tank... or were cut to accommodate engine work and coincidentally allowed for the tank.

The SL350 tank will fit...........a little different each year and the '72s are aluminum.  The CB500T will also fit, holds more fuel, and has knee-indents.

Swapped to a earlier cl450 tank. Less of an oval shape and colour/original patina gives the bike a nice look.

Bung is is m16 x 1.5, still working on getting it to work since the barb doesn't clear the carbs either. Having a hard time trying to get my hands on an elbow. That would clear for sure.
