Is this crazy? I think so.
« on: November 08, 2013, 06:52:55 am »
So I noticed a full set of 1977 4 into 4 CB750K pipes on ebay. Some are near perfect, while some have their issues, nicks, scratches, and such, but all in all, are in pretty good condition. I really only need 2 out of the 4. The opening bid was $49. Shipping was $69. But nobody was bidding, right up to the end of the auction. Then I read in the description that, because of their size and USPS size restrictions, they would be cut in half for packaging. I asked if I could arrange UPS or somebody else to pick them up whole but they replied that they were out in the middle of nowhere and USPS was the only way they could do it. They said they cut pipes all the time and didn't understand why I wouldn't want to do that. Anyway… Is that crazy or what?

On a side note… anybody near Grundy Center, Iowa?
What am I doing and why am I doing it? Those are excellent questions.

What do they expect you to do with a cut pipe? Weld it back together? What about the chrome? Seems weird. Don't do it.

Yes, in my opinion it's crazy
I would probably e-mail them again and tell them chrome pipes are worthless if cut in half

yet another example of a stupid eBay seller who doesn't take the time to find out the value of what they are selling.

I'm going to be in Dubuque, IA on Saturday, which is a couple hours away from there. But I don't think I will have the time to drive over.

I wouldn't be surprised if the pipes are already cut and the seller just didn't want to put pictures of cut pipes in the auction.  Either way he's asking for trouble.  No matter what he says in the auction about cutting the pipes for shipping, if he's showing pictures of whole pipes and the buyer isn't happy with what they get, the seller will be on the hook for selling an item not as described.

I am in complete agreement with ALL of you. The guy didn't see what the big deal was. Just weld them back together. I asked why I would buy something that was going to be damaged in packaging. He said it was the only way he would do it. Like this and many other deals that seem too good to be true or too stupid to be believable, I chose to walk away. What a shame.

Yeah, there's a number in circumference that if you exceed the price becomes astronomical.  80" maybe?  Still has to be other ways to ship it.  Heck, Greyhound will help you mail stuff...

Short answer Yes. I have  a set of the later pipes in good shape with no baffles and no 750. I think the tac says 77-78's.  Thought they might somehow be modified to fit a 500 but that will probably never happen.

Trash. I have never seen a set in worse condition. I can only imagine what the inside looks like. Cut them up all you want, and mail them in an envelope as powder.

Okay, I swear, I have never seen a sprocket in worse condition. But let's look at the bright side: it's 20% off right now. Perhaps, I should post my house trash on EBay. Used toilet paper? Anybody? 50 % off.

He couldn't get anybody to buy it for $49, so he did the next logical thing… he raised the price to $69. A regular marketing genius.

Haha, I had been following this auction as well.  Glad I'm not the only one who thinks a weld is pretty ugly midst chrome.  "Rat" bike fever hasn't really caught on here like it has in the classic and hot rod car world.  Thankfully.

I think the 20% off they are referring to is the actual metal loss.
