Motion Pro Oil Filter Magnet vs. Hard Drive Magnet
« on: February 09, 2015, 02:21:17 PM »
Anyone used one of these? Curious how it would fit a K&N cartridge filter.

http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/category/oil_filter_magnets/

I have an old hard drive, but I need to find a small enough torx bit to get it open. Regardless of which magnet... does it go on the filter side facing out toward the housing? Toward the pipes/front of bike?

Hi.You would want to place the magnet on the outboard end of filter by the spring. Cheers.

magnets between the filter and engine case
....oil flows out that hole in the case, around and thru the filter element, then into the bolt holes and back into the case.
just verify by looking at an oil flow diagram.

I used rare earth magnets from work.  hardware store has them, too.  just a few bucks.

Just bust the heck out of the hard drive. The magnets are rare earth so they will break. I use 4 hard drive magnets on the spring side. Dan

Anywhere a magnet is in the oil it will pick up any ferrous metal particles that come close enough. The outside of the paper filter is the "dirty" side but you can't really get a magnet inside the filter so that doesn't much matter.
The linked motionpro magnet is a convenient washer shape, but I don't know which size would fit on the filter bolt - it could go between the spring and case end or between spring and filter. Where do you attach a disk drive servo magnet?
I use a drain plug with magnet tip. Haven't picked up more than a hint of metal on it so far.

I think I would place the magnets on the oil tank where you have the largest volume of oil.

The question is how much metal will it pick up and is it necessary? Magnetic dipsticks have been around forever. We use them on Trains as a diagnostic. If you see a metal build up you know you have excessive gearbox wear.

You can put magnets on the gas tank it aligns the molecules and gives you more power and milage,
they have been selling that bull#$%* for years too.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have never found a "piece" of steel on the magnets. What I do find is a thin black sluge type coating that just wipes off. Dan

On a fresh rebuild (hone and re-ring)  Yes, i know there is no o-ring on this side of the filter.
This pic was after 50mi ring break-in ride.
Magnets looked the same at the 250mi oil change.

.but  dont the filter take it anyvay..if no magenets are mounted..

have some of you...thinked of to glue the rubber sealing on to the filters.

..so they not   falls of.
.i oiles mine..and are carefull at mounting them..but they are loose..and can be vrinkled off if mounted dry..

Looks lovely. haha.

Did you drop and clean your pan after the break in was done complete? I'd like to see what was at the bottom.  :P

@Trad
Removed the pan at the 250 mi change, had a same sediment, but much less.
Removed pan once more when i pulled the engine for a trans issue.
Little to no sediment.

Mine have never had that much sludge. To answer someones question: I do really believe they get very very small pieces of steel that will go through the filter. I don't have the data to prove this such as what size can go through the filter and what size is on the thin black film/sludge on the magnet. I really believe this belongs in the category of: 1. It is free. 2. It could help. 3. It can't hurt. 4. You have nothing to lose by doing it. Dan

I'm with Whaleman. Easy enough and can't hurt. It's not really the same as a fuel filter debate I don't think. To be clear... see my attachment... magnets to area 1 or 2? I'm not sure what the diameter of the Motion Pro washer style magnet is. I guess if it was large enough it could be more convenient than hard drive magnets.

Since the magnets are on the outside of the filter they can get steel that would have been caught by the filter. I do the spring end. Dan

Makes sense to me. not a sohc but I had a few rocker arm needle bearings find their way into a new billet moroso big block pump. It pumped them and still made pressure.  most ended up in the filter. Some grit made it to a couple bearings.  A few thousand $ later it was good as before.  Moral of the story, a few well placed magnets might have saved the carnage.

I would put forward a very powerful magnet placed on the oil tank. The reason of this is this is where you have the largest amount of oil for the longest period of time. The reason I would remove the magnet is to release whatever is trapped when you change the oil.

BobbyR, I agree. I looked into getting a 2" long X 1/2"  x 1/4" to mount to the dipstick. That way easy to wipe when checking the oil. Just never got around to doing it. Dan
