Not me mate, I don't drive the buckets of crap, for town or offroad work as a mud carter give me a UD and for highway give me a Kenny.  The Macks have had their day, there is a lot better stuff on the market these days.  ;D

like i said, they aint all mack now, they have other #$%* engines and transmissions in them that just dont belong!the original mack trucks with all mack running gear were the last of the true trucks, not put together like some half arsed cafe racer from a bunch of parts, ive never seen a kenworth motor?or transmission?or differential?or suspension?

UD are still all UD except for the gearboxes in the larger trucks, actually so are Hino and Mitsubishi.  All one manufacturer ;D.  The only problem with the jap gear is they lack the ponies for pulling B's down the highway  ;D ;D

japanese horses are much smaller!and they are all detuned and smoggerised now, gone are the days when youd see a heavy truck belching black soot from a standstill or under load.

I used to drive MACK trucks back in the late '80's and they were the toughest thing out there PERIOD.
I DARE anyone to destroy a differential on one. What do you think those monster trucks are using???
I have had those trucks buried in Virginia clay/mud up OVER the axles and been able to drive them out a hundred times at least!

Are you talking about the PACCAR trucks? I had them build some for me in my oilfield days. I don't think I've ever seen anything else that heavy-duty except maybe a full-blown Terex!

Lots of big trucks built on the West Coast.
When Western Star was built here in town, they built some big specials.

When I was a kid a friend of mine's dad had a Mercedes Benz Unimog which as a kid I thought it was the baddest truck ever. Not too long ago my friend restored it for his dad and it's still in use today.

Around here the Macks when they get bogged snap their axles like carrots, they are weak as piss.  I'm yet to see a UD diff break, they are big enough to drive a D9.  Plenty strong enough, and nothing climbs in steep off road work like the old UD's, they may not have big horses for the highway but they have plenty of low down grunt for hard to access job sites.

The other thing is I've never seen such a stupid idea as the Macks two piece piston, with the cast iron crown and aluminium skirt that are held together by the gudgeon pin.  There is no wonder they rattle like a millionaires baby when they are running.  I've never been impressed by Macks and doubt I ever will.  ;D

I can't exactly say when his dad bought or if he bought it new or used but his dad drove it regularly in the early 70's and then when my friend and his younger bro were teens he just parked it in the garage and let it deteriorate. It wasn't until he retired and moved to the UP of Michigan that he had my friend restore it for him. My friend asked him why he had just let it set for so long and his dad said he knew his teen boys would just tear it up if he kept it in running order so he deliberately let it set so my friend and his bro wouldn't screw with it. My friends dad was a German immigrant that came to the US as a child right before WW2 and he loved his MB's. While growing up I remember him having a 300 SL and a SW600 "Grosser" limo which he just sold last year sometime, it was a strange collection considering we lived in a blue collar middle class neighborhood.

My sisters impala wagon needed new exhaust and my Brother in Law was slow to fix it. So my wife and sister went to the auto parts store and bought a full dual exhaust. When I got home from work it was all installed except it was too long, hit the rear axle and hung out the back. They did a great job except they didn't get the joints all the way together and tightened them until the tubes were crimped.
A couple hours of me beating on it with a 3lb hammer, a come along and some 4x4's it was good as new. W0W.

I drove unimogs in the old SA defence force and they're awesome. They'll never compete with something like a Mack or a MAN or a regular Mercedes Benz truck, but you'll search long and hard for something as reliable, strong, light and versatile as a Unimog. We had them outfitted as everything from ambulances to mine-proof vehicles to stalin-organ carriers to fire engines.

The Cummins 8.3 and 8.9 are a two piece piston, never seen one fail. Then again i've never seen a con rod break the length of it. ;D The new ISX 15 is using a monotherm piston that is bare bones but from what i've heard indestructable. Not sure how exactly but i believe the two piece holds merit.
