How can I get these grips off without destroying them?
« on: November 09, 2013, 04:41:40 pm »
I have a perfectly good set of aftermarket grips on my bike, but would like to swap them out for some others to see if I like them better. I used hairspray to keep these in place when I installed them. Is there a way to get them off without cutting them off?
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Glue, eh?

Well, my local shop guy uses 150 PSI air and a thin discharge tube to separate the rubber from the steel.

I'm not sure if all hair sprays are water soluble, but you could try wetting it too see if the glue will soften.

OK....Here it is.
Get a can of WD40 and using that red spray tube, slide it down under the grip and squirt. Use a phillips screwdriver if you have to.  Then pull the grip off. A little twisting always helps.
Once the WD is all in there it will come right off then you can wash them in hot soapy water.

Combine TT's and Lucky together. Compressed air and some soluble mixture may do the trick. What kind of hair spray by the way so we can start a new thread  ;D   I prefer Aqua Net or White Rain  ;)     :)

I use a 1" open end wrench, fit it between the switch housing and beat on the side of the wrench with a hammer. The grips come right off.

All the above and a heat gun, The tube under the grip after heat works awesome and I used silicone spray lube.

To get the air under the grip I use a football needle. First cut the end off so the air goes straight instead to the side. look at the end of the needle and you will see what I'm talking about.

When I was an art student I used a lot of hair spray ,mostly Aqua Net to spray my charcoal drawings so they would not smear when finished.
The Aqua NET saved me a ton of money over the Art store rip off fixative for $6.00 per can. I always had fond memories with that hairspray because it reminded me of my first date and first girlfriend. Love it. LOL..lol

Interesting suggestions!
I pour a kettle of boiling water over the grip and then just twist/slide it off. Didn't have a heat gun when I picked up this tip decades ago, though.

If it is just hairspray, you need no chemicals... just use your air with a small outlet, I use a needle for airing b-balls and such.

Maybe if the grips are glued on with grip glue... no need with hairspray, and if you do need a solvent, water will do the trick.

Funny I can always find a few drops of gas around the shop, but never hairspray..
Its amazing that with about 4 drops of gas a screwdriver, a wiggle or two, and the whole thing loosens off in a few seconds..

I used to use gas to put them on.

Hairspray is the way to go. Compressed air, as it's already been said, is all you need to remove.

I don't want to argue, but I disagree with so many of these suggestions...

Gas?  Really?  One splash in the wrong place and you're gonna be pissed.  That goes for other solvents or caustic chemicals too, even WD-40.  Why run the risk?

A screwdriver?  Really?  and marr up the surface making it harder for reinstall?

Bang it off with a hammer?  Really?  You know that throttle is plastic, right?

This is WHY we use hairspray, it is like blue Loctite, keeps it there (usually) until you want it off.

Simple air is really the best way, and if you haven't tried it, when you do you will wonder what else you've missed in life.

Keep in mind... this is only in relation to the OP's question about grips applied with hair spray... not glue of any sort.

+100000000. I'm a noob, and even I knew the hairspray and compressed air trick.

To install grips, spray a liberal amount of hairspray. Liberal because it contains just enough alcohol (the sticky stuff) to hold the grips really good so you want a good amount, but if you were to shoot compressed air in them they will pop right off. Easy as pie.

I want to see the air help on drilled bars..
Everyone. Who never spilt  gas on their tank, raise your hand.

If you can install dot3 into a mastercylinder, you can handle filling gas,and dropping the bowls on your carbs.

Anyone that does not understand  SPARINGLY... Stay away from silicone sealers, gas assisted grip removal, and filling master cylinders..

And those that may have paranoia...this post is really out to get you.
