Any Goldwing fans in here?
« on: August 29, 2006, 06:00:24 PM »
My Fiancee's dad just got a '79 GL1000.  I just rode it for the first time and have some questions.  We're delivering the bike to him on Friday, and I wanted to be able to give him a good run-down on what it might need.

If there are any 'Wing fans here, please speak up!!!

Go over the usual stuff (plugs, plug caps, carb balancing, fluids, filters, rear drive lube, etc). Check the rubber timing belt for degradation from old age. By that time they solved the stumble-off-idle problem the first year Wings were known for..

Go over the usual stuff (plugs, plug caps, carb balancing, fluids, filters, rear drive lube, etc). Check the rubber timing belt for degradation from old age. By that time they solved the stumble-off-idle problem the first year Wings were known for..

It kept wanting to idle low, so I adjusted the screw for a slightly higher idle and it helped.  But a few weird things occured during a test ride:

It would backfire slightly from the left exhaust pipe on deceleration.

There was a little bit of bluish oil smoke coming from the right exhaust, but once it warmed up, that went away.  (I think that is the fault of how it arrived in the trailer.  It had slipped so that it was suspended from the tie-downs with the right side of the bike down.  It hadn't hit the deck and it didn't "fall", just that the lowest point of the machine was the right cylinder head and I think some oil pooled in there and it burned out.  Plausible?)

There seemed to be an oily/gassy smell whenever it ran (but it got a BIT better as it warmed up).  Worse than my 400F, which also has a cat-free exhaust.

When I snapped the throttle open at low-ish RPM, it picked up speed, then there was a little POP! from the right exhaust around 5-6K and it SURGED forward, as if another cylinder lit off.  Could it be running on three cylinders intermittently?

When the ride was over, it didn't want to idle again and kept sputtering at around 400-500 RPM or so unless I revved it.  After a minute or two, it settled into a nice 900-1000 RPM idle.

The brakes took a LOT of pressure to use and didn't seem to slow it unless they were PULLED, which leads me to think I'm going to have to service the entire brake system.

When I deliver it this weekend, I am planning to replace the plugs, check and set timing, and check the carbs.  These problems all sound most likely Carb related, perhaps skunky gas, clogged idle jets, improper float height, etc.  Are these things a big deal on a 'Wing?  Also, the PO installed a Dyna electronic ignition.  Are they hard to set?

G2- You've got a big Gold Wing fan here, and not the luxury yacht type either, thank you.  In addition to by 77 550F SS, I have an 81 GL 1100 Standard which I love in all respects but one: sheer mass.  Dont get me wrong, the Wang is well balanced, comfortable all day, tons of power, and reliable, and at 6'3" 250, I'm no sissy, but the damn thing is HEAVY.  I recall the dry weight at 540 lbs.

Nonetheless, once you have the carb issues ironed out (go with the later model Keihins w/ accelerator pump if possible), and the brakes (yes you just have to slog it out), the motor is as solid as it gets.

Just make sure that your father in law stays on top of it.

I'm sure he will.  He's been away from bikes for a bit, but he's getting a little starter to putt around on before he jumps on the Wing.  He just bought it now because it was a deal that popped up.

I think he having the whole "Midlife Crisis" thing because he used to own one exactly like this one, except a different color, and I think he's trying to recapture his youth.  Nothing wrong with that.

I gotta say, I'm a fan of small bikes, but I DID enjoy riding it and DAMN was it smooth!!  The saddlebags and rear "trunk" bag would make it VERY practical and the Windjammer fairing kept the wind off.  I was impressed.  It was VERY stable.  It  wasn't as top-heavy-feeling as my 400F and I actually felt more confident with it in fast sweepers than the 400F!!

Horizontal engines can trick you into thinking all 2 or 4 are firing, when they may not be, because the balance is still there. Dunno bout the carbs on a goldwing, but the older beemers carbs were not too tricky at all, though rebuild kits were god awful expensive.
No.

I've always thought that the Wing could be a decent looking ride without all the extras and,
if you've ever seen kghost's Wing, you'd know how good they can look. I've seen a few myself
but, I really like what kghost has done to his. I wouldn't mind having one myself. Maybe
          someday.

I own and ride a '81 GL1100 that I have owned since '81. It is fitted with a Windjammer and Samsonite luggage. I really like the bike, it is my long distance hauler. I will say this GL1200 custom is one nice looking cruiser. I like it MUCH better than the newer cruisers I see on the street. NICE............

Purple one is my favorite

Oh Yeah, I'd seen that one somewhere but, don't remember where. Good looking
machine!! No doubt about that. They might do a great job in full dress but, stripped down and
modified, they are totally cool!! 8) 8)

Classic case of gummed up CV carbs.

Personally I'd rather work on any 750 carb of any year than goldwing ones.

I did mine 3 times to get them right.

Pic's are in the gallery and pm me if ya need advice.

ace cafe london's website.

Thanks, I knew I'd seen it somewhere. There are quite a lot of sharp looking bikes on that site. I gotta get some time and check it out again to see what might have been added.  Later on, Bill

on occasion, I have gone through the whole gallery on the Ace London Cafe
and it seems like some one the pictures have been replaced within the gallery itself. Has
anyone thought the same thing or is it just me?
