Alternative Frame Mod
« on: November 11, 2013, 12:14:59 pm »
I have been debating in my head about weather to fit a Gordon style frame kit, I am hoping to build the bike right the first time and not have to rebuild for quite some time, however I will still have to re-torque the head bolts and don't want to remove the engine just for that.

So I found myself starring at the bare frame (as we blokes tend to do with naked things) and thought instead of it being removable, what if it was a different shape/profile. What if this frame member was still connected in all the same places but was curved/shaped to be higher above the engine at the valve cover?

I know that a straight piece of steel will tolerate different forces than a curved/bent piece of steel. However many people have said this member used to get cut out and the frames survive for many miles and years, so a bent/curved piece should be better than nothing. I am not sure if anyone has had problems with the bolts vibrating loose on the Gordon style kit but this would eliminate it if it was.

I have attached a photo with a rough drawing of my idea, am I crazy to think this or have stumbled onto something?

Also, I know the fuel tank is an issue and the shape would have to allow for that.

Have been trying to do those for a few years now, bending tight radius will be a problem, I built a die, but have not been able to test it yet.

My first WELDLESS frame kit is near completion and will be ready soon...

One problem that will crop up is coil clearance, unless you relocate them the frame tubes will have to move outboard.. Which probably mean bashing the tank.

Take a look at the CB750A frame for a template .................valve cover and head can be removed IN-FRAME...........and coils and tank still fit.

754 - I am interested in the weldless frame kit, also did you end up doing a version of the Gordon kit last year, I found a thread where you said you going to do it.

Old Scrambler - I had a search and found a picture of a frame that only has 1 very thick centre rail, and schematic from CMS that is only slightly different from the K frame so not sure which one is right.

my biggest hesitation with trying something like this is I have to fit the engine to check the clearances and measure it all up, then take out, make the mods, fit the engine, see where it needs tweaking, remove the engine, make adjustments, refit engine, if its good then I can get it all painted, and then fit the engine after all that. and all that is what I am trying to avoid.

Glad to hear you are working on a no-weld solution.  I was going to go to a machine shop to talk to them about heavy-duty split sliders along with (2) slabs and a suggestion for proper hardware.  I'll wait to see what you come up with.

I have a A frame, they are different , and the tank too that sais if you got an A tank, you could VASTLY. Change your frame.
But the A. Tank is even bigger than a 750 K. Or appears bigger.
And if you ran A style lower rails, you could not run the 69-76 ignition switch bracket.
