Pods Vs Air Box
« on: May 20, 2005, 07:30:20 AM »
Hi Guys,

My man Tin Tin has hooked me up with a fine set of Pod Filters ;D, not K&N, but they were free.  So my questions is, is it wrong to strap them on see how the bike runs and use them if I have no issues.  Currently I use an Air box, with 4 into 1 pipes that are drilled out (baffles are pretty much gone).  So the way we see it, would it not be beneficial to feed the engine more air?  Let me know what you guys think.

 thanks

You'll probably have to re-jet, but give it a shot!

I have pods on my 550.  They were there when I bought the bike.  I has the 4-1 exhaust and seems to run fine. I had the carbs tuned at a Honda dealer but no extra jetting.  It has a very little stumble between 3-4k but other than that its fine and runs great.

It's the age old "hotrod" conundrum.  The 4-1 pipes should naturally make the engine run "richer" as the collector creates a vacuum and removes more burned and unburned fuel from the combustion chamber.  This allows more air/fuel mixture in during the intake stroke.  The Pod filter will naturally "lean" the engine as they permit more airflow.  That being said, the 4-1 pipe and the pods may balance each other out and you'll lhave a nice "Hershey's chocolate milk" plug burn.  I have always needed to re-jet when using a header and pods or stacks.  I believe I have always needed to go larger on the main jets and occasionally the pilot as well.

Buy a bunch of spark plugs and do some high powered runs and peek at the burn color.
