about harleys, no bashing, this guy showed open love
« on: August 30, 2006, 08:08:33 AM »
so i was hanging out at my pub of choice (berkely front for those in the area) talking to the bartender about my brake woes.  he pointed me to a guy at the end and we started chatting about the brakes....basically comming to the same conclusion that i needed to rebuild the piston next and see where that got me.  so the guy, having told me he rides an 89 sportster asked what i rode.
  "a 75 cb400 that i'm turning into a cafe racer," i say.
"you just said my 2 favorite words," he replied and we've been hanging out since.

last night, we both showed up, on bikes to the bar.  the guy has a sweet sportster--the kind with pegs at a decent spot--and was genuinly digging my 400.  no hating.

he actually has a "ton up" patch on one side of his jacket and a HD patch on the other.

Berkely Front in Michigan??

How often do you go there? That's like 10 minutes from my house!!

You gonna be there tonight or tomorrow night? PM me if you'd like to meet up!

i'm up there a few nights each week....maybe more soon as a buddy of mine (with 81 450 twin) is moving across the street from it.

might go friday, but tomorrow's the wife's birthday so no dice there.
doubt she wants to spend it listening to us drone on about the beauty of my "mistress" on her birthday.

i'll shoot you a message next time though.

[edit]
this guy i'm talking about want's to start a "ton up boys" chapter there.

Theres two kinds of Harley owners, really. Ones who ride, and ones who, well, own Harleys.

I've never had problems with people who ride, no matter what they ride, be it harleys or anything else.
We all just love to ride, and we all have motorcycles. That's all that matters to me and pretty much anyone else who rides to ride, instead of occasionally riding to make some kind of fashion statement.
No.

occasionally riding to make some kind of fashion statement.

well stated.
this guy said he gets crap for having the sportster....chick bike.

things got hot cams, 100 over kit, hot ignition, gigantic K&N...seriously, that K&N is huge.  seems like he's ridden everything under the sun with two wheels and has about the same opinion of the "harley only" crowd as us.

refreshing to hang out with someone like that, especially after taking some heckling from some harley guys at the dream cruise*.
lets you know they're not all the "$25k and 250 miles/year" type.

*really, wasn't even trying to "cruise."  just needed to get to the grocery store for cat food and it's my daily transport.

As you can see even among HD owners, the snobs and posers have created a pecking order. We are all riding at high speed (30 mph and above)with our feet six inches from the pavement, and nothing between us and the ground but air. Silly pompous bastards.

Dude, be careful. He is earning your trust. Everthing will be going along just fine, next thing you know your pushing a leaky bike with a fat chic on the back.

Never a truer sentiment was spoken. The 'riders' on HD are a genuine bunch of people.

The pecking order is very apparent amongst the Faithful. I've had students be almost apologetic that they own a Sportster and not one of the 'big' bikes.

Nothing wrong with the sportsters. i would rather have one of those than any of the others. At least the sportster can go on a diet!

Then there's some of us Honda riders that own Harleys or is Harley riders that own Hondas?! I guess I'm a Honda rider that also rides a Harley since the Honda came first. And I like you guys irregardless of what you say about Harleys. PLUS, the Honda leaks and the Harley doesn't. Actually I ride the Harley more because it is more dependable. NO FAT CHICKS irregardless !! Go figure. There is just no justice in the world anymore. Guess I'll have to include my sweet Fat Boy in my avatar. They do look good together.

In my case it's the other way around ... my '74 CB750 and my '70 Harley Shovelhead own me  ;D

Two things I have noticed:
1-no mater where you go, there you are, and
2-there are good people everywhere, depends how you present yourself.
