title question
« on: August 30, 2006, 08:33:02 AM »
Hello All!

I am wanting to get a title for a bike, and I have been told a few ways to get a title. My state offers a "bonded title" service... has anyone had luck with this way or heard of this way before? I found a registration from 1997 on the bike and the county on the reg. says it is clean and on file. However, I bought this bike from a friend of the guy and he told me that the person on the reg. is in jail for a very long time(ughh).

Should I pursue this... or just sell the bike. Or would going through this "Broadway title" be better? I hav a bill of sale from the people that sold it to me. Thanks!

Here in Oregon, I just had to find the last person it was registered to, and have them sign a non-interest thingy. Took it back t DMV, they charged me 150 bucks altogether, and the bike was mine.
No.

I just bought a '77 750 from a guy up in WA and there is no title for a few more years.  He had it registered and tagged there.  But here in Oregon, they won't even touch the bike with out a title.  (thats what they told me)  So I just talked to WA. dmv and I am able to register and tag the bike there and wait the time untill a title is available. Untill then I can ride, insure and sell the bike.  The wait for the title has got somthing to do with an "uncertain ownership" deal.  -Pod-

I am not sure if I should pursue a title since the DOT researches and contacts the previous owner. I dont care to have a crazy at my door asking for his motorcycle back and im out a hundred bucks.

The bonded title service sounds similar to what they do here in Michigan. The bike is appraised and you have to take out a surety bond on the bike. I guess that's to compensate the former owner if it somehow gets ruled as still rightfully belonging to them.

They also have another option where if the bike is over 6 years old and the value is under $3000, you can simply fill out a certification of ownership along with a police inspection of the VIN number and get a new title.

Have the police run the VIN# first. If it hasn't been reported as stolen, you can fight it by challenging that if he wanted his bike back so badly, why didn't he report it stolen?

I used International Title Service www.its-titles.com for mine since my PO is deceased and LA has some silly ass rules for new titles.

Jonesy (or anyone for that matter)

Can I pick up one of these "certificate of ownership" forms at the DMV or a police dept?

I checked and the bike is not stolen and it is not in the immediate computer system, but the gal at the DMV dug around and found the registration that I have with me. I know the bike, in its shape now, is not worth $3000, so I might chck into that and ask my bro-in-law police officer if he has heard of this way before.

Yup-  I just went through the same thing here in MI with my bike.  You need a VIN/On-road vehicle inspection form and an ownership declairation form from the DMV (Sec of State here).  The form numbers are TR-54 and TR-205 for MI if it helps.....

Be prepared to WAIT for weeks and possibly months to get a title, however.  Maybe it's just me, but you'll have to blow through the usual counter worker at the the DMV office and talk with the branch manager to get anywhere.  The branch that I *USED* to go to employs some of the rudest people I've ever met- and they're SO QUICK to say "you can't do that".   ::)

I'm still waiting for my title- going on almost two months!

You beat me to it. Here's the link to these forms. You can print them in PDF format:
For the TR-54 Form:

For the TR-205 Form:
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/tr-205_16198_7.pdf

I was able to get mine in 1 week, but I had everything all done ahead of time and did my homework. Now I gotta go do the historical vehicle thing....
