'74 CB750 K5 emblem questions.
« on: November 12, 2013, 05:52:31 PM »
So I have a 1974 CB 750 K5, it's a 74 manufactured in November and it has the flake sunrise orange tank. My paint guy is going to be able to do a pretty much perfect match so I've decided to have the tank completely redone and have my ugly side covers finally match. I'll be able to take care of the rest, get rid of the few dents, and have it be perfect.

So the main emblem which is here it's probably an easy replacement. I can get for $55 a reproduction and N OS is about $80. These are eBay prices.

Now the oil and battery cover emblems are a little bit different. My emblems seem to be red, not orange, and below the wings there is the HM.

The OEM and reproduction ones seem to be orange and the wings do not have the HM. And my paint guy hasn't removed them yet but the two different types of emblems seem to be on either one post or two posts. My diamond emblems might be salvageable as you can see they're in pretty good shape. And I can't seem to find the correct ones anyway.

And I'm having trouble finding the 750 four emblem as mine seems to be chrome and all the reproductions I'm finding are white. Is it possible that mine was white and someone polished all the white off?

The striped decal kits seem to be a slamdunk as people seem to reproduce them very well. I'm probably going to pick up a $75 set as I'm not looking for all of the little warning stickers as well. My guy is going to clearcoat over them.

Thanks.

Style wise along with an orange jewel your side cover emblems should look like this for your year to be correct. The current ones you have are correct for a 71 but the one you have pictured has the top of the F broken off also.    PS- Also you should be able to delete the other 2 duplicate posts before someone responds to them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-CB750-1975-76-Side-Cover-Emblems-Pair-CB-750-/160681255457?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2569596221

Those won't fit the depression in my side covers.

Here is a pic of what the OEM should look like...do not worry about those depressions. Those badges are made to cover the depressions.

This is so confusing. What bike had the emblems on mine now? The HM under the wings seems pretty unique. And the 750four logo seems to fit the depressions really well. Does the larger logo fit in the depressions. I need to look for a photo of the back of one.

Yours were for a K1 or a 1971 the only year for the red jewel. Take Johnies word for it that the newer style emblem will fit, He has done a few of these bikes very nicely.

Jay, if it helps you any, the tank badges are side specific if memory serves me., in case you're replacing them.

The replica ones I looked at mentioned they were curved differently based on side.

Here is a pic of the OEM cover after I removed the correct era emblem. You can see the wax marks from where it was. Now you can see how the correct emblem will cover that depression. The only piece that goes into the depression on your cover will be the jewel. I think Honda mass produced these side covers and planned so the K1 script badge fits and other newer badges will work on all those 750 covers from that era. Click pic to enlarge it.

This is so confusing.

If you look at the link I posted above, it clearly shows what badge goes on which model.

Mind a question: the small pics of your tank paint looks like the paint is in really nice condition. Curious as to why you'd re-paint if you're concerned about restoration accuracy?

There are a few dents. The overall look lacks that original shine. It's generally dull and in a patchy way. And that rust bubbling under the black. The new paint should be dead on with the choices we made.

Are you buying a paint kit specifically for this or did your painter come up with a formula ? These candy colors are tricky needing the proper base color etc.

We carefully looked in all the books, and since the original paint was right in front of us we were able to come up with a specific formula. I didn't write down the specifics but he did. Pretty much looking at the flake samples we figured out the specific flake size and color. That orange flake sample in the book was on a black backround so it was slightly too dark. We are going to put that flake on an orange background. It should be 99% perfect. And since it will be all new paint, there won't be old paint left to make a side by side comparison.

Share the formula sometime when you get back with the results as a lot of people would probably like to nail that color.
