New Friend: Brown K1
« on: November 13, 2013, 08:35:16 PM »
This K1 came to visit. Been in storage, real storage like stuff piled on top, etc for decades. Great story. Hope Phoenix will come on and tell it, if he hasn't already. Both (bike and Phoenix) live in Indy. He wanted to come over and see Phaedrus.

Already been to Deals Gap/Dragon. I don't know, maybe a candidate for BOM?

Really nice bike!!
I really want to find a bike like that for a good price so I can drive an original CB750 without any mods at all. (Maybe engine apart with new gaskets, seals, refresh rings, hone, valve jobs...)
Remove the fairing and enjoy the beautiful CB750. No problem with long touring without fairing.

Owner ("Phoenix") said it was a Wixom. I agree, leave it, very functional.

The top of the tank has the green showing through.

FYI: The brown was made from Honda Red and Green. The red would fade first leaving the Green to show through. Very accurate.

If you're speaking of the bike in this thread, the owner, drug it out of storage and has gone through it fairly well. The motor was slightly stuck and required a top end overhaul, but I think it's still all stock. As I mentioned he has been riding it all over town. I'm not sure if he trailered it to the Dragon or rode it down there. But it was ridden there and thereabouts.

He rode it to the "Busted Knuckle Garage" (my shop) from the east side of town. Sounds pretty good. Maybe needs a carb synch.

I think I may have misled: The new friend is "Phoenix" relatively new forum member who lives in Indy and noticed I did too. So he rode HIS K1 over for a visit.

That should make more sense.

*toink*

Especially a fun sound with a 3/4 helmet with bubble shield. More vibration on the hit. Now that would be a cool hi-speed shot on Mythbusters!

I have the same luggage rack/sissybar combo that I took right off my bike. Is there any way to remove the luggage rack only? Wifey will only ride 2-up if I have a back rest.

The rack and sissy bar in the picture are one piece and can only be used as one piece, unless cut and re-welded.

Guilty!  I'm the one that put it into a shed for 26 years.  I bought it in 76 with 10,000 miles for about a grand.  I put about 5000 miles on it.  It came with the Wixom and I added the luggage rack.  It's an AMCO.  You can take the backrest off and add a taller piece, if you wanted, for luggage.

I pulled it out of the shed in 2011, with about 15,000 miles, when it was too hot to sail.  It was a mess - I have pictures.  I thought the first thing I did was try the kicker and I thought it was loose.  I took soap and water, and 0000, to it and started  working on the systems.  Rebuilt calipers and m/c.  Checked the back brake.  New chain and sprockets.  Cleaned carbs. New tires.  AGM battery.  Halogen headlight.  Went to start it and it was all of a sudden locked.  It could have been from having the carbs off without stuffing the intakes.  Took it to an expert who freed it, cleaned it, new rings and seated the valves.  They would not use the new points and condenser because they wouldn't install anything but Honda, therefore, it still has 30 year old adjusted points.

The first overnight trip was to Springfield for the ama flat track. It was four days and about 200 miles each way.  Blew a rear tire(tube) and the ignition started spewing much smoke  after blowing some fuses.  Limped home and fixed it.

The next trip was down to the Dragon.  I installed the Wixom for the trip.  400+ miles down.  left home Tuesday and spent the nite just north of the Dragon.  Did the Dragon, Cherohala Pkwy and part of the Blue Ridge parkway.  Headed for Louisville and my kids on Friday.  Nine hours in the saddle.  Sunday morning I left for Oregonia, OH  (north of Cinti) for the ama hillclimb and then home.  A total of about 1500 miles.  Bike performed flawlessly and it was a dynamite trip.

I developed a little misting from the head gasket so I want to cut the frame, add a kit and re-torque the head.

The bike is just about bone-stock or at least of the period.  I replaced the front turn signals and some of the bolts to get a little shine.  I'm keeping all the original parts.

It's a great bike and the Wixom comes off when the temperature goes up.

I tried to unstick it with every trick and chemical known to man.  It was hard to get with the engine out.
btw, re the Wixom.  On my trip, a big bug hit my mirror so hard, at speed, that it knocked it loose and unscrewed it.

Sweet!  That bike is nearly identical to my first one.  Dad had bought it new and it had come with the dealer installed Wixom fairing painted exactly as the tank, complete with similar striping on the fairing.  It had a luggage rack and white bates saddle bags.  A few years later we rode back over to the same dealer for some reason, probably picking up filters.  Dad saw a new K4 on the showroom floor and traded my 350 twin in on it, gave me his K1 right there and rode the K4 home!  K4 had a windjammer on it.
