Still waiting on powder and machine shop work, damn I hate waiting... >:(

I received my drilled and thinned rotors from Godferrys garage.  If you have been on the fence regarding whether or not to pick up a set....  Do it!  These are so nice and Jeff's customer service is second to none.

Not to be outdone by Godferry's customer service is Ted (Ricky_Racer) from Classic City Cycle and his excellent Giuliari replica seat, another beautiful peace to help me polish this turd.

Also had brandEn kick me a rebuilt speedo drive and new H4 headlight for the build, thanks bro.

What a great community we have here on SOHC, not often you have forum members putting out such great products that back them up with excellent service.

This TURD will get polished.... 8)

Love that seat.....
I do like that seat , I might just pull the trigger on one of those. Trying to visualize how it would look on top of my Z1 tail piece ?
Found this bike in completely stock condition in Feb. 08. Paid over twice what my new one cost 30 years ago. Am trying to re-create the look of the late 70's Drag Bike styling.More later. 4-2-10 It ain't stock any more and I have no idea what I am trying to create !

Hi, Steve-O and Kemp. Well, yes and no. We've actually worked out the hinge mounts (not easy!) and rubber supports for a CB550 and mounted it on a frame. However, there are a couple reasons why we haven't moved forward on the project.

First, without redoing the molds for the foam and seat pan, the inner rear fender fouls the existing seat base and molded foam. Due to setup charges, modifying them would be a costly proposition. The only alternative without a seat pan mold redo is to trim the CB500/550 inner plastic rear fender at the top where it interferes with the seat pan and we try to never make anyone modify their bike unnecessarily.

The second issue is that the early CB500/550 peanut-styled fuel tank must be used due to the length of the current seat and upholstery design. Our seat is an exacting copy of the original Giuliari for an early CB750. The late CB550 tank, like the CB750 K7-8, has a longer tank. Fortunately, the earlier tank is a bolt-on to the later CB550 frame. We cannot, will not make new upholstery due to the astronomical cost of the die used to imprint the perfect Giuliari embossed waffle pattern.

BTW, the combo of the early tank and Giuliari-style seat works very well on a 500/550. Very fluid lines and highly integrated design. I've attached a few photos of our prototype CB550 seat fitted to an old frame and junk early tank as well as of a completed CB550 with a Giuliari seat taken from the Web.

We'd like to make a seat for the middleweight but the only way that will happen is if we have, perhaps, six or more confirmed orders with significant deposits and if the buyers understand the need for the early tank and have the patience to wait perhaps two months for the new foam and seat pan molds to be completed and their seats built. So far, we've been reticent to even ask.

I hope this answers your questions and that you have a sense of what we go through to make as nearly perfect a seat as humanly possible. If anyone has any additional questions, I'd recommend that you PM me. Thanks for wading through this posting. RR

Thanks, Kemp. Okay, I'll start a list. I won't ask for anything until I'm sure the project can go forward. You might want to PM me with your email address so I can contact the list, assuming there is one, collectively. Have a good weekend! RR

^^^ Don't worry about hijacking my thread, I am happy things are getting done and Ted is getting business.  I think the seat looks outstanding on the 500/550.
Ted can just give me a discount on my next purchase from CCC..  ;D ;)  Consider it an advertising fee, LOL.

The last bits i needed to order to polish the Turd came into today, can't wait to start building this thing back up to proper form.

Excels and stainless spokes.

And most important the candy gold paint set from Yamiya, damn I am impressed with this and so stoked!

Put on the new petcock and gas cap kit with stainless bolts and packed it away, so sad but it is safer hidden away from my kids.  I was really concerned with ordering one of Yamiya kits with out viewing one in person and shipping from Japan.  The kit looks amazing, pics DO NOT do it justice and it was at my doorstep in under one week.

Now if only my powdercoater and machinist would get their #$%* together I could start building.  ::)

I would Tews but I don't have a frame to put it on, at the powdercoater.

This isn't going to be a restore by any means, and I really don't care for the white in the stock badges.  The white in the stock badges wouldn't really fit anything else cosmetically I am trying to do with this build.  I wanted the badges to look similar to the sohc on the side covers.

What does a set of Excel rims run and where are inexpensive sources for the same? Presuming you shop for a good deal like most...

For a set of Excels and stainless spokes/ nipples you are looking at around $650.  I do usually shop around for the best deals that can be had but for rims and spokes I always use Buchanan's.
http://buchananspokes.net/

I am sure I could find them cheaper on ebay, but with Buchanan's you know what your getting.
