Cheap aftermarket Carb O-rings
« on: November 12, 2013, 06:51:39 PM »
Are aftermarket Carb O-rings crap?   >:(
One month after replacing all the carburetor o-rings on my CB500 I found that all of them were brittle and the ones between the carbs were leaking.
Ive never seen o-ring go bad this fast.
I ordered OEM kit from Honda and replaced then all.
Has anyone have any experience with this, bought them on eBay.

thanks, Mark

buy Honda brand only.
if you cant, Viton (FKM) has the best temp and chem resistance.

Thanks for the reply's. I was pretty shocked they deteriorated so fast.
Does Viton sell o-ring kings for bikes or do you order size to fit. Does anyone have a list of the o-ring sizes for the CB500 carbs?
thanks, Mark

buna-n & nitrile have OK chem resistance, but they wont last long with temps over 200F.  viton(aka FKM) is the material, not the mfr, and will withstand temps up to ~400F
there are metric viton o-ring kits available online. they aren't cheap.  it gets expensive when you have to take the time to do it all again down the road.  (I just replaced 6 orings, none larger than 18mmx3mm, for about $22)
all of the oring sizes are listed in the parts fiche pages for your bike.  check them out on cmsnl.com

Not here in fact my local NAPA had the same o-ring assortment I had which was nitrile. I had to order mine online because nobody around here had viton.

Just take the rings with you to your local o-ring dealer if they have not disintigrated yet, they should be able to find you the proper fit.
