750 Chopper oil tank question...
« on: December 10, 2014, 03:30:10 AM »
I have a couple 750's, but this is my first custom chop.

Just picked it up a couple days ago with some little issues, electrics, brakes, etc...

In admiring the build, I noticed that the small line from the back of the tranny goes to the bottom of the oil tank, along with the larger feed and return lines from the engine.

Remember this is a custom hard tail build, so the tank is not stock.

I've read that the smaller tranny line is supposed to be just a vent line, and after peeking into the empty tank during an oil change, I can see that this line would be bathed in oil when the tank has any oil in it, let alone full (it's flush with the bottom of the tank, no riser tube of any kind).

My question is.... Is this an issue, or nothing at all to worry about?

Thanks all.

Do you have an oil guage? If you do and oil runs out that hose, your pressure drops.
I had one like that on an amen tank, it had a pipe in there, but it broke off from vibration at base of tank. Unknown to me.I would lose pressure at idle on sidestand,  it would come back when I stood it up.

Keep in mind it may lose pressure when tipped over.

On my K8/F3, this line 'vents' to the bottom of the stock tank.
I dont want oil over my rear tire.

Hey Frank, I just learned today that with my bike on the sidestand, the oil level in the tank dropped. (stock K1 oil tank) When I held the bike upright, the scavenge pump gradually refilled the tank. With the tube flush with the bottom of the tank, it would be constantly draining the tank.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Man, did it take a while to figure out what was wrong. Took a pump apart, tried another, bought a NOS pump, i still haven't package.... I think I figured it out when I saw the broken off tube in the tank. Another guy fixed it by  sliding up a piece of brake line tubing.
Yes it goes in the bottom of the tank...but it ends up at the top..

The riser tube would have to seal against the bottom of the tank, or it will drain into the sump when the bike is sitting. When started, if the tank is empty, there is no oil supplied to the pressure pump, or the crankshaft, until the scavenge pump pulls oil from the sump and pumps it into the tank. The same thing, wet-sumping, happens on stock bikes, but usually takes weeks or months to leak down that far.
With the bike on the side-stand, the oil evidently flows away from the scavenge pickup, and there will be no oil pressure. :o

Yes the Amen tank had a hole drilled, tube stuck in with a inch hanging out the bottom. Welded to the tank.. Mine broke above the weld, inside the tank.
What tank is on the chopper?

No idea on what tank it is.... Just looks like an overgrown soup can, three holes in bottom. Two threaded for the larger lines. One smaller one for the line that goes in back of tran. Looking through the fill neck I can only see the smaller hole, and it's flush with the bottom of the tank.
