Another 500 followed me home again
« on: November 21, 2013, 04:38:47 PM »
Yes it happened again. There I was , in my truck with the trailer on, justa drinkin a cup of coffee , mindin my own business , when just by chance I looked in the rear view, and to my surprise , this  old 500 honda is sittin there just like it  thought it should be there. What was I to do? Well, I took it home.
Excuse #1 has been over used and doubtful of it's believeability ....No Honey , that's the same machine that I've been working on forever..... I repainted it again...how many times?  At least 10 times, yeah I just can't get the color I really want.
Or #2 These bikes should sell pretty quick for a decent profit....What do you mean "When am I going to sell some of them?". Ain't time yet , the value is still going up.
Thought about excuses but the fact is I don't think it matters much as long as the bikes don't get more attention than she does. So around here it's I got it because it was available. Because it was.Got it cheap , because I did, and it keeps me out of trouble, which it does. Sooner or later she'll get tired of that and I'll have to have another rap ready. So I'm just trying some out here to get a better idea what to use.
Any ways, This poor machine has been waiting out in the weather for me for a year and a half. The owner wanted too much for it, told him so and walked. did it again a year ago at a lower price, still too high, This week he asked if I would be interested in a $200 parts bike. Why yes I would ,so with trailer in tow I was off to pick up this

It has a bit of rust on her

It has a baffle free header  on one side

And tearing down should be easy ,since allot of it isn't there

Isn't it great!

550 Snowbike -Somebody had to do it.

For $200 I think it's great. What are you going to do with it?

Well , The engine is seized , and fortunately I have a 550 engine that came out of the last 550 frame that I put an extra rebuild 500 engine in ( That was confusing, Orange bike (550 ) has 500 engine in it) still confusing....
I've been building sweep the floor type machines lately just to get this place cleaned up and not waste parts by shelving them. Now the spares or extras are on machines. It's time once again to start collecting more 500 550 and 650's so there will be enough parts to play with.... I don't Ebay parts, I buy whole machines for the parts............rambling....
Okay, I don't know what this will turn out to be, don't have a clue, not even a plan .
But I do know.....I had to have it.

No I haven't yet, I just nabbed it this afternoon and shot a can of PB Blaster on it so it'll come apart easier.
I never try to run a stuck motor, just causes more damage. I find it easier to take the engine down and split the cases, that way I'll  know the condition of everything in it when it goes back together, I don't worry about failures of things that I should have /could have /but didn't check.  And every gear, bearing and interior surface will be spotless when it goes back together....no old residue or crap that can infect the rebuild when finished.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing the whole job.

Thanks Matt, I don't know what I'm into yet  but am finding out.

IW yes if it isn't mouse poop, it's rusty bike poop here in the northeast. The weather is hard on outdoor stored vehicles .

Thought I would take it easy on myself like Gold Arrow suggested and bump the pistons loose then take it apart. Sprayed down every nut on the bike last night with PB, While taking the plugs out ,1 and 4 came out easy ,#2 was in there but came out alright , #3 not so lucky a couple quick bumps to free it .... snapped the plug off  leaving the threads in the hole.
This hasn't happened to me yet, so right now I'm thinking machine shop to save the head.

Finally...  Someone finds something as ratty as the stuff I always end up with.  I agree, for a couple hundred bucks you have to drag these things away and try to give them new life.  Looks like he sold the side covers, carbs and a couple other bits.  Maybe he got his original asking price after all?

The carbs were in a box, PO thought he might clean them, he got as far as removing the float bowls and gave up so those I have.
The sidecovers are always an issue, I did a count of how many side covers I still have left to find to totally complete  past projects , I need 3 pairs L and R and 2 r's. I went to a bike gathering at Dutchess County this past summer and met a couple dealers that said "I have tons of those, not with me ,but I'll call you when I get back to the shop.....".so I gave them all my contact numbers,  but I haven't heard from either of them, every now and then I check milk containers to see if their pictures are on it.
This PO was like so many that think no matter what condition, it's worth big bucks, The asking price a year and a half ago was $750 and it was already outside leaning on the barn wall for 2 years before that. I run across this all the time.
I figure I won't spend more than $200 on a beat machine and that's only if I need certain parts that are there.
I never spend more than $500 on a running low miler project bike with title because I'm going to tear it all the way down and rebuild it anyways.
  I've bought $100 machines

and rebuilt them, costs the same to do to a 40 year old $500 bike usually.
I probably could have offered less for this bike but I'm out of projects, could use some parts, and got tired of waiting.
