Will Apex GP clip on bars hit 1976 CB750 F tank?
« on: November 23, 2013, 06:13:09 PM »
I found a set of Apex GP clip on bars but would like to know if they will hit my stock tank without modifying the steering stops. Does anyone know?

The smallest size is 37mm but I think I can make a shim.

Part of it is the angle/positioning for your comfortability. Your choice of controls could also make a difference i.e. throttle cable banging the tank

I don't think anybody can specifically answer that for you. Guys have tapped the steering stops for socket cap style bolts to ensure no conflict between bars and shiny paint, it is a very discrete way of modifying the stop positioning, modular too

A shim will work for the clip ons, they look nice

To avoid colliding with your tank, pull the steering to full lock, then rotate the clip on away from the tank enough to hold comfortably in your hand position. Then switch sides and repeat. Then, you have to decide if the riding position of the clip on location/orientation is comfortable for you. May be too much reach.

If you can't get them comfy, your options are: dent the tank (drag...) or different clip on rises with offset and angles.

My personal opinion:

I don't like the idea of shimming a clip-on. The tension on that piece needs to be STRONG to insure safety and stability.  The last thing you'd want is for that to slip loose while steering under power in a corner or slow, long, leaned-over situation. Could be disastrous. There are many other clip-on vendors that make appropriate sized clamps and offer angled risers.

:End opinion.

Your may also require different cables due to change in length/height of controls...

Depends on the angle , my experience is that the angle were I like them the stock control pods will touch at maximum range. Only way around it is a) weld up the stops which you don't wanna do or B) do not extend them maximum, which eventually you prolly will by accident .

with them tweeked out and t'd off they wont touch tough but you might not like the angle  , I never have.

Thanks all. I'm gonna try fitting them but if the angle isn't to my liking I'll modify the steering stops. From what I've read it seems like it doesn't affect the ride, more with maneuvering the bike around a garage which I don't have the luxury of having here in the city.

My only concern now is, to shim or not to shim. Was going to trim an aluminum can, shim and lock it down, but will that suffice? I would think so but then again I'm not that experienced with that method. Is this method dangerous?

Rather than trying to fit the motorcycle to the handlebar, I would get clamp-on bars that fit the bike, preferably those who come forward like the Tomaselli bars (other brands are available that are identical). It is not only safe, but they wouldn't hit the tank and are adjustable. And they are contemporary which I consider an added bonus. They even work with the wider K7/K8 tank.

For the price of those clip ons just get ones that fit the bike. It isn't like you are shopping for the 50$ chinese ones

True. Considered a few options but the adjustability and the reach is what I'm going for. If there are others w those option I'm all ears.

Also the hose clamp steering stop mod is brilliant. Thanks to Chris Liston for the idea and photo.

The Tomasellis are by far more adjustable, fit the fork, and will for with your tank without modifications.
