Blowing fuses
« on: November 22, 2013, 04:56:02 PM »
I attempted to hook up some led turn signals. The rears went well, I purchased an led-specific blinker module installed it, and the rears blinked and worked well. I then removed the front turn signals and left the bare wires sticking out .
Here is the issue:
As soon as I hook up the lights, the rearmost fuse blows. I tried to figure out which wire has power and which one is ground, but they both have power according to my meter. I hooked up the positive on the signal to one of the wires and ground the other wire coming from the bucket along with the negative from the turn signal to the frame. I heard one blink and then the fuse blew.
On the other side, my headlight blinked when I hooked up the wires the same way and then the fuse blew. Unfortunately none of the wires for the turn signals have any markings and the rat's nest inside the bucket doesn't help

If you have a post-1972 SOHC4 bike, the 2 wires in the front turn signal are:
one is running lamp and the other is turn lamp.

Thus, they both have power to them.
The housing is ground.

The turn wires will be either Orange or light Blue, or if the wires are Black then they will have a little collar on them in Orange or Blue near their plug-in end to the main harness in the headlight.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

The demons are repulsed when a man does good. Use that.
Blood is thicker than water, but motor oil is thicker yet...so, don't mess with my SOHC4, or I might have to hurt you.

Thank you!
well, that explains why I was blowing fuses.
I'll hook it up tomorrow (after I buy more fuses) and report back.

I saw the orange collar
Which one would be the blinker, or does it matter

What bike they are not all the same?
Maybe this is why HondaMan ask this?

Thanks guys.
Once I understood they were two positive wires, it was pretty easy.
In fact, too easy. I opened the bucket, traced the original wires, unplugged the original black wires going to the turn signals, and plugged in the positive wires from the new lights. I also found two empty female connections for the new ground wires by tracing the original passenger side ground wire leading from the bucket (the one welded to the nut).
Who knew the bullet connectors would be the same size after 40 years?
