Rear tire clearance to frame loop - cb550
« on: November 25, 2013, 08:37:53 AM »
This is my first build so any help is appreciated.

I recently added a rear loop on my 78 cb550, but I am now worried about the rear tire clearance this has given me. The shocks are stock, and I have read that they will compress about 3", I only have about 2" of room. Is there anything that I can do, or will I be forced to change the rear loop?

Thanks!

That's why a lot of loops stick farther out. Where you have that located I would guess that bottoming the tire against the loop is going to be an issue.

Devon, It's Jared. If you look at a lot of the brat styled loops/seats that are shorter you will notice they are up swept to add clearance as well. Hope you can get it dialed. I have a bunch of parts too if you need replacement anything. I bought a spare 550 parts bike.

Ewen, your loop also sticks out about 3 inches more than BMX's. I don't think I've ever seen a loop that short before where the end is at or just in front of the axle line.

Even without longer shocks you have more travel available because the arc traced by the wheel will being the tire even further inside the hoop where the underside of the seat is just as likely to be the contact point as the hoop.

The perspective of the picture could be skewed, but if the center of the loop is forward of the axle, that will make the situation worse because as the wheel moves up it also moves forward bringing the highest point of the tire, the part directly over the axle line, closer to the hoop.

If the frame rubs against the rear tire it could stop the rear tire. That is the danger.
