Aw crap, look what I found in my sump!!
« on: November 23, 2013, 09:49:58 AM »
So I'm working on a cb550 cafe racer and stripped it down today, when I removed the sump to take the engine out of the frame I found this, looks like a piece of the cam chain tensioner or guide, anybody else think this is what it is??

Thanks

Looks to be part of the cam chain tensioner or the guide. You hit it on the head

Yep, that looks like an end of the long tensioner blade that goes in yhr metal part.

It looks like more engine rebuilding work to me... Regardless of the part (the others and you correctly identified it) it means more tear down and money. But, it's fortunate you found it now instead of later after putting it all back together.

Wonder what other surprises lie in store after the valve cover and head come off... Aren't these bikes great!

Ya definitely the best time to find it, I've had this bike running though before I tore it down and the engine actually sounded like it was running very sweet, definitely no obvious cam chain noise or anything, needless to say I'll be taking the head off at least for a look. yes these bikes are very great  :-\ :P

The good news is you don't have to pull the head to remove the tensioner assembly (if I recall correctly). The other good news is that since you didn't have any noticeable chain noise, the cam guide blade should still be in tact, meaning you don't have to pull the head and lift the cylinders up. That is unless you WANT to pull the head. Which wouldn't be a bad idea.

The only bad news is that's the more expensive part if you decide to buy brand new, about $90.
