F1 '76 cylinder head
« on: November 28, 2013, 04:31:06 PM »
Hey,

One of the bolts for the manifold is missing and I think I might jest try and find another cylinder head instead of trying to fix it with a helicoil or something..

I dont know much, and haven't found a head for a f model.. my question is, can I use from a k model as long as it's song?

Thanks in advance :)

Just helicoil it mate if the threads fcuked.
That's easy enough to do.
If I was you
I'd be worried about me.

Well it is repairable if the head is good to go again.
You could either get the hole filled with weld and drill & retap the thread or machine up an insert with an external and internal thread and make a custom helicoil.

It all depends on if you want to let it know who the boss is.  ;D
But seriously mate, I wouldn't can it because of one buggered exhaust thread.

True - it's not the biggest job to fix it but with lack of time and me wanting it back on the road again asap it could be an easy option to get a new one :)

That's fair enough mate.
You could repair it when time allows and either keep it for a spare or sell it to recover some of your outlay.
Good luck either way mate.  ;D

Have you checked just how big the hole is? I had some big @ss holes drilled in my head only to find out that a regular old 12mm helicoil was find AFTER the "drill" and tap.

The drill for the 12mm IIRC is 21/64 although a common 5/16" works just fine with proper tapping technique. I bet you are right around there. Red loctite if the threads are so-so depth for the helicoil? The red loctite for the insert I mean.

Could also always pull it off and have a welder draw a bead for 20$. Gotta try to center the hole then tho
