The "other Bike" or bikes
« on: November 26, 2013, 08:12:56 PM »
I just read Honda dog's thread about his "other bikes" in his stable that are non sohc 4, I think that it's interesting and like another member said,"I can look at bikes all day". So I was thinking ( I can't believe this hasn't been done before) if this hasn't been done before , it probably should be done, especially with the coming of winter.  Us northern guys need something to do when we can't ride so checking out everyone else's other ride just makes sense.
All my bikes are SOHC 4's,  500's,550's,650's no 750's except for the  72 cb450 DOHC

I'd like to show you a  newer than 1981 machine, even one that isn't a Honda, truth is , I don't have any bikes that aren't Honda or any newer than 81 .My collection doesn't vary much. Not that there is anything wrong with that .When you hear that"He don't know any different" , that's me ! But I do wonder what other bikes are worth owning and why.
What else do you ride and why?
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.
550 Snowbike -Somebody had to do it.

That's a great-looking 450.... and since I'm in the colder climate, also, I love looking at other bikes. What else is there to do sitting around the fire at night?

Keep the pics coming, guys...

Yes, sitting around a fire and checking out bikes in the winter. With a cool glass of lemonade in the summer. Maybe some warm cider in the fall. But there ain't no time for lollygaggin in the spring, we got bikes to get ready.

Actually, spring, summer & fall are bad times to look at pictures of bikes, I'm busy riding and looking at actual bikes.....

In NY , all winter they put so much sand and chemical on the roads, this year for example , took to mid May to wash all that stuff off the road surfaces  so it's reasonably safe to ride. So the spring oil changes, carb clean outs, and a good general  going over of each machine isn't rushed at my house .Once it's April, I know there is a month before my machines see pavement. That's spring.
While daylight hours are spent working , thinking about riding , and sometimes getting some riding in, the rest of the Spring ,Summer, and fall is spent in the shop rebuilding these old Hondas. Have found few things that  I like better than that.
Which brings me to this thread, I am wondering what to get as the" other" bike. I got em semi chopped , mildly cafe'd, stock and everything in between, and at the end of the day it's all kinda the same. So I was thinking that perhaps broadening my horizon with a different machine might get me more seat time or a different kind of seat time. I want to take long rides comfortably,  want something dependable,  that handles well, that has decent acceleration , something not old, doesn't have to be new, not slow, or funny looking...... I don't know where or what to look for , I'm clueless right now and was hoping to get an idea through other riders here  without looking lame.               Okay so that's not happening, so the question still is what is your "other" bikes and why.
And of course, pics are always welcome.

I have a couple trail 90's and a GL650 Silverwing at this point.  I taught my kids how to ride on the trail 90s and I had a CX500 and realized how much I liked it after I sold it.  So when I came across the GL650 I had to have it.  Needs much work though....

That V Max looks bad a$$.
I've been looking to expand my horizons and as you know have been scouring craigs list, saw some things that caught my eye like the rd 400 and a 550 gt both older machines that felt similar but different but maybe too similar. I really liked the high miler CBR that was there and was ready to pop on it when I ran across an 81 650 with 1700 miles. I'm a sucker for this stuff. I will pick the 650 up tomorrow. The CBR is still in the breeze.

This sits in the shop next to my 77 CB400F, my non Honda model:

My buddies V-Max, I would never have guess by it's condition that this bike is 24 years old:

And his wife's new ride that she sold her CB919 for:

I like the looks of an RD350 more, but is a RD400 a superior bike?

You've seen most of these before (I have a thread about the brownie one, or "brownie" rob). These are the girlfriend's bikes. Trying to get her to sell the CB125s which is in outstanding and 100% original shape:

Probably the most rare bike in my collection. Bought it for a measly $100 from my boss. He simply didn't know what he had.

I'm a motorcycle restoration person when I'm NOT working. It actually is a lot of work to tune/maintain/restore 5 bikes at once.

That's what I was thinking Larry. Steve, sounds like you need to be looking for an RD400.

I just can't find myself really wanting a two-stroke bike. Do you bring a little container of oil with you all the time when you refill? I can envision a very loud and obnoxious machine that throws more pollution in the air....would be like driving around one of my STIHL yard products, but louder.

Fenders, most modern 2 strokes have a separate injection tank for the oil.   A tight 2 stroke does not smoke all that much and only becomes loud if expansion chambers are added.  ...Larry

Good info Larry.

What about the two stroke of a RD350 and RD400? How do you carry oil around with you?

Exactly, the oil tank is on the left side (where the side cover would be on a CB).  It sounds great, not like a landscape tool at all.  I've gotten more positive comments and offers to buy on this bike than any of my others.
BTW - the 1979 RD400 was one of the last 2 stroke street bikes made.....

And no, I don't need a 400 to go faster, that's why I have the Z1 900!
