1972 Honda cb500four build
« on: June 29, 2015, 12:39:09 AM »
How are you all! Quick over view, my old man bought a honda cb500four brand new back in 1972.. Through usual life circumstances the bike got put under cover and left virtually untouched for 30 odd years..
After I showed some interest in cars ( particularly his mazda rx-4 ) and working on motors at the age of 13-14 we decided it would be a good project to restore!
We basically pulled the cover off, charged the battery and changed the oil, a drink of fresh petrol and it started first shot! Then came the fun stuff.. Mechanically the bike was pretty sound, Carbys were drained and cleaned, scraped the rust off and some new exhausts as the baffles inside were dust.. Then the bike sat around again as the old boy found it hard to climb onto her.. Along came his Harley and the bike sat even longer.. Now at 22 and with my bike licence I finally pulled the covers off again.. Blew the dust off.. Once again the Carbys leaked petrol, so I took them apart and all that was required was a little clean on the needle and seat and a bit of a bend to increase the tension so it would shut off when full.. The exhaust was cactus once again so I decided to buy some new ones that suited it better and grinded all the rust off of the 4 into 2 extractors, welded up some brackets, painted the frame and parts again, and removed the bits I didn't like! All the paint is immaculate and original!
Hopefully I can continue the build thread some more! Also looking for some ideas on a bobbed rear fender?
Cheers! Trent.

Welcome, nice bike.

riverfever did a neat job bobbing his fender, though I think he doesn't have a inner plastic fender at the moment.

What a great survivor bike. Covering the bike did wonders for preserving the original paint.
