Bearings. Need help!
« on: November 26, 2013, 07:04:51 PM »
What is a good source for purchasing bearings?

My transmission blew a bunch of the dogs so there's metal shards throughout my cases, so do I need to replace all the bearings in the cases? Or just the transmission bearings? Also are the bearings standard sizes? Such as; if I have a 77k engine can I just purchase stock size bearings or do I need to measure with plastigage and get the exact size specified? What will happen if the bearings are not perfectly fitted?

My rebuild has been stalled because of this and I'm in need of some advice to keep things moving along.

Please help!! :-[

The 'safe' answer is: yes. But, the crank & rod bearings receive filtered oil from the pump-filter system. The tranny, not so much: it receives scavenge oil from the crankcase. How much ground-up fines were in the case? That's the big clarifier, here. If it was run a long time and made silvery fines all over, then they went through the pump and tranny, both.

Hey Hondaman,

Thanks for the advice, there doesn't seem to be a lot of really fine metal flakes, its mostly just bigger stuff. The fella I bought it from didn't ride it much after it started having problems so I might be able to get away with leaving the rod/crank bearings. If i take the oil pump apart will it be readily apparent if there were fine grounds running through it? For example will it be caked with flakes if it has been ridden after the initial trauma to the transmission?

Thanks!

You might find this thread a useful read mate.

I bought and installed this set in my rebuild.

In regards to the rod and mains bearings, pull them all apart and check real carefully. Just looking at the bearings in the rod caps and on one side of the case I thought yep they were fine and when it cam time to clean everything properly and put back together with the plastiguage it all started unravelling.

One rod bearing was badly grooved. One rod cap was warped and there was a gap between the cap and bearing. One crank journal was tapere either side and another journal was pitted and flaking away (could have been metal sprayed.

I am not saying it will happen to you but I definitely reckon it's worth thoroughly checking them before re install. I ended up with all new black bearings for rods and mains and needed a new crank and rods from the States.

It was a big hold up in rebuild but I am glad I discovered it.
