Well...........It's a start
« on: October 20, 2013, 02:45:40 PM »
I just picked this CB750 up today and I'm not really sure what I have yet.  It is titled as a 71 but there are a lot of interesting parts on it.  A ducktail seat, K0 side covers and air filter cover, and carbs set up to be operated by 4 cables.  It's been bouncing from place to place over the last 20 years and somewhere along the way the front end was misplaced and obviously the tank has seen better days.  I've been wanting to build a bike for my son and I guess this is as good a place to start as any.  I need to find a tank and a front end but for an initial investment of $50 I figured I couldn't go wrong.  I'm going to start figuring out a course of action this week but any words of encouragement, ridicule, or advice would be greatly appreciated.  I think I've attached a picture for your assessment.

OK, I'm not sure how to make this a picture but here is a link to the photobucket page.

If you go to the link and you see the box on the right hand side that says "Links to share this photo" ... if you clink inside the box that says IMG next to it then it will automatically copy the link. Then when you're making a post on SOHC4 you just paste that link into the dialogue box like so:

Will the front end from a 74 cb750 work OK on a 71?  I'd want to try to find a set of K0 gauges but I have a possible lead on a disassembled bike that I can use for parts on the cheap and I guess I could use the tank as well to make this red bike whole...

Well, I made an error, it was actually titled as a 1970.  The PO sent me the title in the mail and he had said it was a 1971 so I just went by what he said.  The vin tag shows a date of 2/70 and the frame #1024802 and motor #1025086 means they have probably been together since day 1.  All the exterior parts are K0 so given everything else would this have been a late K0?  Just curious, I've decided to keep everything as original as possible so I'm deciding what parts to start scrounging for.   Thanks.

That's correct, mine was made in March 1970 and the VIN is 10296 - very close to yours.

That is a sweet K0, look past the bad and you'll see lots of nice early diecast parts. What a deal.  I just bought a 4-1 carb cable. I figured I should get one while I still can. The drawback is if you get hung up on originality it can get expensive because we are competing with the sandcast crowd for those hard to find parts. Sidecover grommets should be replaced to help save the sidecovers, they get brittle and the grommets are as hard as rocks.

Does it have a 'wrinkle' tank? Open up the gas cap and show us a picture of the spine if you're not sure.

50$?  awesome.    If that is a wrinkle tank and clean inside it may be worth having a good body man repair it.  ...Larry

This bike may have been loved at one time but somewhere along the way it fell into the hands of a very sadistic abuser.  The tank regretfully is not a wrinkle tank, the hump is very smooth on the inside.  Short of hitting the lottery or some unknown uncle leaving me a secret stash of wrinkle tanks in his will I'm going to try to find a tank with good paint (ruby red) and just salvage what I can from this one.  The engine is seized and I already know that the crank is bent from my initial inspections.  I've always wanted to do a complete rebuild and crack these cases just to say that I've done it so I guess I got my wish.  My game plan is to pull the engine this weekend and put it in my basement workshop over the winter for the build.  Strip the frame and send it out to the powdercoaters and talk to Hondaman about his swingarm rebuild service and some of the electrical parts he has available.  And hopefully in the spring start to assemble parts.  So a tank, air box (mine is cracked), COMPLETE front end (mine is totally missing) so handlebars, controls, cables, gauges, triple tree, etc. you get the picture.  I know from previous experience building cars, boats, planes, etc. that the smart move is to just save my money and buy something that is nice and pretty and turnkey and save myself a lot of frustration.  Thankfully I've never been accused of being smart so I'm going to forge ahead on my first stock rebuild and hope I do half as well as some of the other members here have done.  Pictures of my attempts soon to follow.

I've been sourcing parts for my bike and a friend stopped by today with a care package.  I had purchased some parts from a mutual acquaintance of ours.  Cash had exchanged hands with parts to be picked up later and the bum skedaddled with my cash.  Anyways my buddy took pity and dropped these parts off.  Most of the front end stuff is from a K1 but they should work fine.  I'm not sure about the gas tank but I'll see if it will  work.  Still need a headlight bucket, turn signals, and maybe some small parts, not sure yet.  Pictures attached so if anything missing jumps out I'd appreciate a heads up........Thanks.

Yeah he's a good guy.  We've been supplying parts and trading with each other since working on our bicycles since grade school.  One of those good things that balances out in the end.

Subscribed! The gauges you have are incorrect for the K0.. You can get the black faced and plastic housing from a member here. He sells the ones on eBay.... Marcel is his name If I remember correctly. He can also change your gauges into the diecast ones since they share the same drives
