exhaust installation tips? Having a hard time
« on: December 02, 2013, 05:56:27 PM »
Can anyone here give me some tips and tricks to re-install a 4 into 1 exhaust? I know how to orientate the 2 collars that go into the exhaust port with the header and the flanges..

can i put the flanges and lightly bolt them to the studs first, then insert the header and then put the 2 piece collars in?

I can't figure out how to do this without the other 3 flanges falling down the header pipe....

What bike/exhaust? Sounds like 550 or 77+ 750. I just did it the other day to test-fit a MAC 4-into-1 to my 550, it's a bit of a chinese puzzle but not bad. Just try and align everything and loosely place the half-pipe holders then collars over it. I just left the collars hanging on the bottom while snugging the others. I can't remember the order but I don't think it matters much though.

Good luck.

If I remember correctly I would put the collars on first, 1 bolt on lightly, slip the exhaust under, up and in. Bolt the back on mid way back, then remove each collar and put the 2 x 1/2 in and bolt it on. NOW that was my 1981 cb750 custom. 4 into 4. It may not work with a header. do not forget to put the gaskets in first.

First off, put new exhaust gaskets on the head, be sure to remove the old. A couple dabs of grease will hold them in place.

Then slide all four flanges over the head pipes and put the pipe in place, secure the back mount temporarily with wire if none is around to help.

Next put the the two collars in place and slide the flange up into place, install washers and nuts, do all four before tightening.

i've used a little masking tape to hold things in place.

Well i finally got her done guys. Thanks for the help.

I couldn't get any pics (too tight a space and bad angles) but I wrapped the headers (semi gloss black wrap) and hand sanded the muffler a satin/brushed finish.

Did we help or was it just determination that got it done?

You achieve 'PRO Status' when you have to remove the exhaust every time you want to change out your oil filter  :P

Follow the path Steve-o showed.  It is correct.
And, just to add, the flanges have SHORT fins on one or more sides.  Be sure to note their orientation, as it will help you slide it past the down tubes and onto the studs.

A bit of tape works wonders.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.
