Broken float pin holder in my new bike
« on: November 11, 2013, 04:49:29 PM »
I just bought a 1977 CB550F Super Sport. I drove it before I bought it, sounded fine for being a cold day. Brought it home and I couldn't get it to idle with the choke closed more than 95% so I thought the carbs must be dirty even though he said a shop cleaned them 8 months ago. It's been sitting since then so I figured dirty gas had clogged them up again. The more I ran it the worse it sounded. Sounded really weird and weak at low RPMs and after a while it would barely respond to revving and die.

I take the carbs apart and they are super clean inside except for the #4 carb, it has gunk around the cast metal parts that hold the float pin in place. I pull the pin out and they fall off. Looks like the gunk is glue. It was standing up when I took the pin out, so I think the float was working ok before, but maybe the glue came apart and got sucked through the engine?

How much of the engine do you think I need to clean? Is there any way to patch this cheaply or do I need to buy a new #4 carb or set of 4?
Thanks very much, I'm really disappointed my first bike was a scam.

Forum member harisluv may have a body.   Microwelding may work, if you do not have anyone locally, forum member Jim French in GA offers the service.  You can post in the bike and parts wanted for a body wanted...larry

I don't think you have to worry about anything getting sucked into the motor.

I would just get another carb body.

Awesome, thanks everyone! So I'll replace that one carb and hope the rest of the engine is ok. I guess it'll need to be synced after that too.

Do you know if the 550k uses the same carbs as the 550f?  This carb is pretty cheap on eBay,and I would transplant my parts into it.

That carb will not work with yours.
There is a casting number on the carb and you should match any replacement with the same number. (probably 069A)

As stated above, check with Harisuluv for parts

RESOLVED!
I mailed my entire carb set to Jim French to have him weld it back together - $25 per post plus shipping. I got them back and installed them and the bike runs great now! Thanks for the advice guys.

It was especially hard to weld with jbweld residue stuck in the pits of the broken surfaces! I'm really happy with his customer service, if I ever have a problem with them I know he'll have my back.
