Will Royal Enfield stuff fit?
« on: May 19, 2005, 05:32:33 AM »
Anyone have access to a newish Enfield? I keep thinking that alloy tank and solo seat on the "Clubman" would look killer on my 400. Measurements/dimensions?

anything can be made to fit...how talented are you.

Seriously, measure the tunnel, as long as the tunnel will fit over the backbone you can always add mounts to the frame to make it fit (a good welder should do the job for about 20-50 bucks). IIRC the allo tank is beween 550 and 1200 dollars depending on where you shop, at the cheapest it is a bargain but at the top price you might as well have a real tank builder (like evan wilcox) build you the proper tank specifically for your bike. As far as the seat is concerned the one I see hitchcock's selling looks like a dunstall style which I know you can get for a cb750 and 550 in fiberglass from places like airtech. Alos check on ebay as there is a guy that sells a thruxton style seat (like the one in the pic) for the cb350 that would also probably fit the 450. There are several places out there that I am sure guys will chime in with just look around. Unless you already have the enfield pieces it is alwyas better to start with stuff actually made for your bike.

Wow!  That chrome gas tank, and chrome side covers are absolutely brilliant!  Did you do that yourself?

What did you do for the left sidecover?  Inquiring minds want to know...

I was thinking of doing something similar with my 550, but instead of chroming it, just polishing and clear-coating the bare metal tank.

Looks awesome, what a great idea... I was planning on painting mine stock burgundy red, but I might have to give this a serious pondering...

Are you finding the chrome holding up to wear and tear?  Do like the look?  Generally happy with it?  Or do you find yourself pining for a painted tank?

Thanks,

Rob

Hey Ernie I reckon your question would get better results with people who ride Enfield's ;) they still make them in India I think.

They are still being made in India.  The clubman is assembled in England by Watsonian-Squire, the English importer for the Royal Enfield bikes.  I notice that Royal Enfield doesn't offer the diesel engined bikes any more. :-)

A lot to think/re-think about here! I like the shape of that chrome tank- is that a 500 or 750 tank? Would it fit on a 400 (which has a different shaped tank)? Is that oil tank a stock 500/750 item? I don't really know that much about the other SOHC 4s. I couldn't very well chrome my plastic sidecovers... Like the idea of just polishing the bare metal and clear coating it too... that would give it more of a classic alloy look (not as shiney).
Yes, Enfields are still built in India. I went from wanting a Velocette and started looking at Enfields hard. Found out they're just as finicky as Velos. If you're going to actually ride them, that is. Long story short- there's a GB500 sitting next to my 400. Love 'em both. Will check with Watsonian about tank dimensions...
More input ! ! !

gday guys,I used to have a bare metal tank coated in clear but it looked a  dirty grey after awhile ,like a drab paint job.Ilm very happy with the chrome, easy to keep kleen and you dont have to worry about it with brake fluid ect.The left side cover is painted chrome plastic but when finances permit ild love one made out of alloy.

Chrometank,
Can't believe how much your bike resembles a BSA. As my stock parts are in very good condition, I rather hate to canibalize them... What is chrome plastic paint? I've seen silver paint that's shiny, but it doesn't match chrome. I actually like the shape of your 750 tank very much- more of a British/clubman look I think. Any idea if it would fit on the 400 (since you had one)?

gday, here is the new picture.I think this 750 tank might be to long for the 400 but ilm not positive, you could always cut down a seat base and recover it to allow room for the bigger tank .If you go to a wreckers you could ask them to let you try a few different tanks on it,just whip the old one off when you get there and ilm sure you could get a good idea about any mods you might need to do.got this cool oil cooler from ebay from a guy called "Legendsmc"
cheers
