Question about a 78 750F
« on: December 03, 2013, 07:54:33 AM »
I picked this bike up  a few months ago and just noticed that the rear wheel dose not line up with the rear fender. Looking from the rear the wheel is more to the left of center. I saw a 78F in e bay that looked almost new and it looked the same. My question is this normal?

Thanks Dannie

Yes a picture would be most helpful we need to see how the wheel lines up with the frame and swing arm more than the fender. Most important is how does the chain and front & rear sprocket line up. I would not ride it until you find out about the chain & sprocket. You can chew them up pretty quick if they are off to much. If it is indeed off then we need to look at the rear wheel spacers.

I am brain dead today but could it be the PO used regular older K hub instead of SuperSport?

See the picture.

I have the same year but a K model. But my gut is telling me it is not normal. HondaMan has a post about some early 750s that were off on the front from the factory. It was corrected by pulling the rim over with the spokes just a couple of mm. But I don't think that is your issue. Did you read reply #2? Have you had the rear wheel or fender off? See if your sprockets and chain line up. I would get down at eye level with the top of the rear sprocket and at the very least eyeball the alignment but a string would be a more correct way to do it. It is a lot easier to remove the chain guard and front sprocket cover too. In your last pic. the close up of the chain I see some thing sticking out on the tire side of the chain. What is that? With a new to me bike the first thing I do is remove both wheels to inspect the bearings, brakes. cush drive. You don't want to find out these things are bad at 60 mph. Could you rotate your pictures before posting please :)
One more  thing. If you don't have HondaMans book you really should get it or make a hint to Santa. Look at the other things that Mark (HondaMan) has to offer all of his stuff is top notch and truly plug and play and no he is not related.

You asked for pictures.
I have three of these bikes.  Here are some pic taken some time ago from before and during the Corbin seat project.

I will ask if the grab bar is tweaked on yours, as it will make the rear mud guard crooked if that is so.
Also there are supposed to be two rubber bumpers/grommets between the grab bar pins and the mud guard positioning features.  These don't seem to survive over years of P.O.s and tire changes.

Thanks, TwoTired that is what I needed. Yours looks a little off to the left also. I will check those rubber bumpers. I also checked the chain alignment with a straight edge and it was good.

I admit I was never all that attentive about centering the fender with the tire. I just make sure the front and rear wheels are in alignment.
