Yeah, so I just crashed. Hurray for me.
« on: November 27, 2013, 08:47:41 PM »
The K3 just took a dive.

Stuck on the freeway in heavy holiday get-away traffic, I was trying to get right to get off the freeway, a guy was trying to get left,  had his blinkers on, no sudden swerving, did nothing wrong, I just didn't see him right away and when I did away and grabbed too much front brake and locked it. Front end slid out & I landed on the left side. Slid maybe 3 feet. Scraped pegs, side lights, bars, clutch lever, front fender, and - you guessed it - broke thru the stator cover. It's got a bout a1" hole and some good cracks.

Shifter didn't get touched, tranny shifts fine BTW.

I've never pulled that stator cover off. What can I expect when I go in there? The diagrams make it look like the stator is bolted to the cover by those 3 bolts in the middle of the cover. Is that whole mess going to fall out when I remove the cover?
I guess I also need to drop the oil pan & look for shards of cover?
Anything else I should know?

I have a cover but I'm gonna need a front fender...

Some guys pull the shifter cover..but once sprocket cover is off, you can undo the wires, below your serial number. Then caredfully pull them out with the whole dyno cover.. The stator and coil will stay in there.

Sounds like you yourself came out relatively unscathed and that's the good news.

It's a a piece of cake. Don't worry. All parts are still available-new. You already have the cover--good. The fender is very pricey though. I guess, you be looking at EBay.
I always take the transmission cover off first before removing the dyno cover. It might not be a bad idea to have new gaskets for both. As long as Field Coil and Stator didn't get damaged, there is nothing to worry about. Straightforward replacement , no surprises, no parts from that in the oil pan either. This might be a good time to replace some of the bolts from the covers too if they are still original. Relax.

I'm glad you are here to write about it, could have been a lot worse as you know! Bad year out there for riders, I had my spill in May on a sharp curve that was all MY fault, my dumbass was day dreaming as I entered the curve and lost it! I walked away from that one without a scratch, so I 'm very thankful today for that!

There is a hole down low behind the rotor that goes directly into the crankcase area. If you can peek in there do it. You might not be able to see with the rotor on. maybe a mirror?

Just glad you are OK and can easily fix the bike.

Yah, glad you are OK. When you do the change out of the stator cover put the bike on the center stand and put a shim under the left side so the bike tilts "slightly" to the right. That will keep oil from coming out...however, if you are dropping the pan you won't have to worry about it. Last, may want to put some sealant on the rubber grommet where the stator wires come through the cover or you may be taking it off again. I had a leak in that area on my first KO build. Let us know how you come out.

Good that you didn't get hurt. Take your time, fix it right, and get back on the horse. Don't let it intimidate you.  Sounds like all you need to do is just replace damaged parts. Hang in there! 8)

thanks guys.
I'm fine. Sore shoulder is about all. Safety gear very literally saved my skin. My left boot is scraped to hell.
And I'm VERY glad my wife's dad lives nearby and has a trailer!!!

Grumpy: I am so happy that you are not hurt.  Your lovely orange bike can be fixed.  It has truly been a bad year for riding.  I got hit from behind by a motorcyclist I was riding with and went down.  Wasn't as bad as your accident.  That must have been scary for you.

Probably only an hour or less to change the cover if the wires are not too crusty.
Anything you cant see towards the crank, probably wont hurt anything..

Mooshie: I wasn't too shaken up. I've been in many bicycle crashes over 25 years of racing (including a fatality) so hitting the ground isn't such a big deal. The only scary part was being down in traffic & trying to get across 4 lanes to the right shoulder.

I want out an took inventory of what I need to get it going. If anyone has some spares to sell, please let me know.

Wait...  you got the front brake to lock up ?  on a Cb ?   ;)

Glad to hear you are ok - bike riding skills help out more than one would think.
