I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would want a sport bike that weighs 575lbs that doesn't have front brakes?

OK, last Sunday I went ahead and got these two bikes (bike and a half?) for what I feel was a very good deal. The sportster fires and runs but I think a carb clean may be a good idea. Basically it runs on the accelerator pump. The motor sounds good but I haven't been able to ride it to check out the transmission as yet. The front brakes need to be bled and the lights need to be wired to a switch. I'm going to make this bike roadworthy and then I'll see what my options are. I may have a line on an earlier kick start engine with the sheet metal primary cover. Even though that would be a right side shift too, I would definitely go for it. We will see what happens.

I noticed that also. Rear shocks are not correct either. I wonder how much he has in the roller The KRTT roller on Ebay only got to $3500 and didn't sell. I'd rather have this one.

You guys are right about the fork legs. I should have made it clear in my first post that this is not a genuine Harley but is a replica. It is a chrome moly frame with good looking welds but I don't know who made it. It is an older frame and was probably raced for awhile.  The tank, I believe, is Harley. I think this is going to make a great street tracker even if the value is not what a Harley would be. As far as the engine goes I would really like to use the earlier one with the steel primary cover if I can but that may or may not happen. Is that the 900 that you mentioned? As you can tell I know zip about Harleys. I owned a Honda shop with my brother and his son for 38 years and never did much more than tire changes on Harleys and I have never owned one personally. Over the years we took a few in trade but all I ever did was re-sell them. So if I sound ignorant it's only because I am.

The "Tin Skinny", as we called them BITD, was used through 1969 on the 900. That would be a good motor for that tracker. I can't see in the pics well enough, but it looks like it may have Ceriani trees, but the lower leg looks like a stock Sportster leg. How much money do you figure you have in that roller?

Powderman: I paid $3000 for the whole works. That is the '73 and the roller and some loose parts. The trees are Ceriani and I think the legs are sportster. In the spare parts I got two new Pingle petcocks, rear master cylinder, front caliper,a new Drag Specialties solid state regulator and a Haynes repair manual for the '73. The rear caliper and front master cylinder are on the roller. All in all I'm pleased with the deal. I think I could probably come close to getting my money back out of the '73 and be into the roller for next to nothing with some money to go into the build. I hope that's the case anyway.

Ya, you did all right, especially if that is your plan. I would do the same. That year Sportster on Ebay is between $2-$3K.  You probably won't get the XR for free but it will certainly be worth what you have in it after unloading the 73.

They look like mid seventies to eightiesp FX or XL Sportster legs for dual disc.  Tops are usually tapered, so they are cut back, or the made an adaptor.
Lawill made XR frames I think..
Is front hub Honda?, looks ike rotor is.

754: I was told that the front rotor is a Kawasaki 650 but I'm not sure which 650.
It looks like the tin primary engine I had been told about is going to be financially out of my league. Apparently it is a one owner bike that the guy bought in '69. Oh well, the search will go on.

Dont be skeered, right side shift is a mans bike

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Many years ago(early seventies) the bike shop that my brother and I owned carried Honda, Triumph and Norton. Honda was left side shift, Triumph and Norton were right side and to complicate it Triumph was first gear down and the rest up while Norton was first gear up and then rest down. I once wound a Norton up in second gear and then proceeded to stuff it back in first when I went looking for third. I caught it quick enough that it didn't do any damage but it sure got my attention in a hurry. So I think I'll stay out of trouble rather than have to get out. I hope to be able to jump back and forth between my Honda CB500 an the Harley with no confusion. But if I don't find a more suitable donor I will use the right side shift.
Bob
When I was a kid I had a 68 Kawasaki 120. This bike had this crazy a$$ thing called a rotory shifter. All gears went down 1, 2, 3, 4 but if you kept going down it would hit neutral and then back into 1st. Talk about catching the mistake before letting the clutch out!!! :o :o

Hey Bob, if that beautiful XR roller was mine, I would give some serious consideration to putting a Honda thumper motor in it. ;D

Yeah, Rotax would be good, too. 50-60 HP in a bike that weighs less than 300 pounds would be fun!! ;D

Thanks. Any idea what the XR750 motor weighed?

I'd be guessing, but for numbers sake. My XLCH Iron Head motor weighs 188lbs from the factory. By switching to aluminum heads and cylinders, deleting the generator, kick start hardware, etc. I was able to shave approx 50lbs off the motor. So I'm guessing the XR motor is probably around 135lbs.
The 70-80 XR750 weighed 320lbs. I weighed my XR1327 yesterday and it weighed in at 331lbs.

A lot of them were never left alone, the tuners constantly tried different things.
Even 82 is great considering what we have to do to our 750 to get 85-90..even with a sohc..

Wow, 331 pounds!!?? The lightest I've been able to get my Seeley to is 401 pounds. Honda SOHC 750 motor weighs about 180 pounds. Honda XR500 motor weighs about 90 pounds. Bob, can you weigh the XR rolling chassis for us, please?

read em and weep. :D 1327cc, won't know what power it makes till I get on the dyno, but I'm expecting 100-110hp. With my motor being 77% bigger than an XR 750 110hp is only 35% more hp.
