Yet another stuck wheel bearing retainer (750)
« on: December 06, 2013, 03:33:39 PM »
Already searched, followed all steps, actually have a pin wrench. Now that that's outta the way

I've drilled all four punch marks and I can see the bond break visually, yet no matter how hard I twist, the damned thing will not budge. Soaked for hours in PB blaster, no luck. Am I looking at machining this thing out here or can it be saved? I AM unscrewing it the right way, lefty loosy, search showed that 500/550s have it the other way but I'm working on a 750 so I'm hoping this is right. The retainer looks like its aluminum too so not sure if heat is going to help. Suggestions?

Here is a picture of my homemade spanner. If I had to make it over it would be at least another foot longer. Others have clamped the spanner in a vise and used the tire for leverage.
It was a battle all the way out but after I cleaned the thread a bit it went back in as smooth as silk.

Did you drill as deep as the punch mark and a little more and one size larger than the punch diameter? If so put some PB Blaster on it and like Kevin D said you just need some ass on it.

Retainers are replaceable.  Get a punch in one of the holes and whack it.

Thanks!! After reading that these are a pain and replaceable, I did as you guys said, took a punch and whacked the damned thing till it spun loose. Then blasted PB blaster so the displaced holes could lube up the threads more and it worked like a charm. Got all three of them out. Pix in my build thread.
