Back-Up Camera's
« on: December 08, 2013, 06:24:13 pm »

I know that back-up camera's serve a very useful purpose, but when you use them to back out of your driveway without physically turning your head to check for traffic...bad things happen.

Here's what my neighbor did to my previously un-scratched van on Friday... >:( >:( >:( :'(

Work minivans have blocked windows, so extensive use of camera and blind spot mirrors are a must. that's in addition to a horn and physically looking as much as I can. No issues in a year and 60k+ miles.

The neighbor that hit me was driving a 2013 Ford F150 Crew Cab 4x4. (with a tow hitch >:() No visibility problem, just relying on his B/U camera too much!

I backed my jeep once into that dumb yellow post behind Sam's Club  - ever since I turn and look instead of using mirrors.

Too bad about your van, always liked full sizes.

I think your neighbour did you a favor Schmitty, what the hell are you doing owning a frickin' poofter car like a van anyway?

You should burn that baastard and buy a Mustang with the insurance money, and grow some balls! (apologies in advance, I'm drinking heavily as I type this.......) ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Is there another type of drinking. Especially in Oz... A bit rhetorical, no?

I don't like the new backup cams. Don't want to rely on looking forward to see behind. My car has audible and visual sensors in the rear view mirror. I get to look, see and hear. No scratches, no bumps. Backup cams are ONLY good for hitching to a trailer. Period. Technology for the sake of technology.

Get ready. I'm predicting they will be required on all vehicles at some point. I like mine (2013 Pilot). The thing is long, rear gate window high and add to that tinted glass, the cam is very handy. But yes, to be used in conjunction with common sense.  ;)

I'm 60 years old, never had a back up camera and have never in my life backed up into anything. Back up cameras, another item to  make the world lazy and fat.

Though I'm 70, not lazy and not fat. Ok, I could lose a few pounds.  ;) I hear what you are saying, that's where the common sense comes in. There have been numerous toddlers backed over, even by their own parents because they were behind the vehicle but not in view of any of the mirrors.  :(

That's analogous to saying that because some idiots have shot themselves accidentally while cleaning a firearm, we should make self-cleaning firearms or stop cleaning them. That is justification for the argument that responsibility and common sense are required to operate any machinery or tool. Not "tools should operate machinery". And by "tools" I mean idiots.

I reckon those blokes are being a bit hard on you Bob, even though I don't have a reversing camera on my Ford Ranger work truck, I'd really like one, because there isn't a human alive who can see what's happening directly behind the tailgate area of this sort of vehicle, no matter how many mirrors he's got, unless it's a fricking periscope!

The Ranger has the reversing sensor beeper thingy which is much more trouble than it's worth, as it will beep like crazy if I'm reversing in my narraw driveway, yet won't beep at all if I'm backing up to a large glass surface (like a shop window, for instance) as the sonar waves travel straight thru the glass, closely followed by my towbar.

It's that "Boy who cried wolf" thing, after awhile I switch off and ignore it, whereas with a camera, I can do something that the human eye is incapable of, seeing thru a solid mass.

It cracks me up when I read posts starting with "I'm 400 years old, and I don't need no stinkin' unnecessary technology, blah blah blah", all typed on what is probably the pinnacle of unnecessary technology, the home computer................. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I dusted way too many mustangs with my Grand National back in the day to drive one of those poofter POS's. No apology needed Terry, I would have been disappointed if you had said you were drinking 'lightly'.  ;D ;D  My love for vans goes back to the late 70's van customization days. My dad had a couple of them and I've been hooked ever since.

I agree with you Bob. I have one car with and one without. When my leases are up in Feb, I will have two with backup cameras and side monitors.
I am by no means a tech guy for tech sake. I just turned in a flip phone.

Both the camera and side monitors have a valid purpose All of these have a purpose. I started driving in 1966 and cars were pretty low tech. We got by, bit that was all we had. Now we have more and I see no reason why anyone would be against it.
