Petcock leak
« on: December 11, 2013, 12:41:05 pm »
1974 cb 750 all stock

My petcock appeared to be leaking and overfilling the float bowls. I had another new--still in the wrapper packing washer -- the 4 hole kind. I replaced the packing washer and the leak is now worse. It now leaks outside the petcock from the lever area. -- right where I put the new packing washer. Before the leak was only inside the petcock.

I cleaned the mating surfaces and there does not appear to be any special way to fit things that I know of or can see.

Don't you just love it when you try to fix one thing and something else jumps up.

Please advise-- thanks in advance for your help.

fuel resistant pipe (teflon) tape.
works great if you're leaking at the threads.
replace any o-rings or seals with new viton or buna rings.

Sure you put it back together correctly and did not put the wavy washer in the wrong spot ?

Ekpent gets the prize.

I came back in and studied the parts books-- which I should have done before i panicked and ran to the forum.

Wavy washer in the wrong spot. When I took it apart, it sort of all sprung off-- I put it back in a way that looked right but did NOT make any sense-- wavy washer should be placed next to a flat surface that would not flex.

This forum is like a good drug-- the problem is the good drug and the forum works. I should have gone back to the book first.

Sorry for the alarm and grateful for the help.
