Way to go Joe ;) $100, Wish I could run across some deals like that. Been a Honda man all my life, but I really like the Suzuki GS1100E. If you run across one of those for $100 or so give me a shout ok ;D

Thanks!  Will do :)  I'm starting to feel bad now though.  I haven't had a running Honda for years.  The 650's been in pieces since I got the triumph.

Going to start that project in the spring though...hopefully.

Ideally this GS will not take much $$ to be a daily rider.

After finishing some of the odds and ends on the XS750, the CB650 will become the project.  Will be a long term one though as it's a 100% torn down and will take quite a bit of $$ to build right.

I think I may have beat your deal. I picked up a 78 GS1000 in running condition for....wait for it....come and get it.
As soon as I get the KZ off the rack with a cam cover and stator replacement I'm going to start on the GS, really thinking about converting it to an S model.

Deal has been sealed and brought home today. Put on battery tender and will take tank and seat off tomorrow to start looking for the cause of the electrical issues (eg. DEAD..no power).

Couple Plus's:
- Guy put tires on it recently.  Supposedly < 500 miles on them.  Bridgestone Spitfire on rear and BT45 on front.
- Brand new Motion Pro Throttle Cable came with it.
- Factory Service Manual
- Original Tool kit still in tail and seems to have everything.

Seems to be in pretty good shape under the layer of Grime.  Will do a quick wipe down tomorrow.

Cheers, Joe

I have quite a bunch of GS models around this place and have brought many back from the dead.
The are easy to work on and actually simple to get running again.
The two most important things to do after you connect the unplugged yellow wire that is near the back
of the tank and near the battery is to adjust the valves and thoroughly clean the carbs.
You can get all of the parts that you need to rebuild the carbs from: www.cycleorings.com
They NEVER need a carb kit to fix them so don't waste money on carb rebuild kits!
Here are a few pic's of some of my basket cases that have been brought back from the dead:

Check your fuses and all connections if still no power.

Fuses are good, but connections are not so good.  There are quite a few connectors (handlebar controls and others) that run under the backbone by the engine which are quite heat warped and in some cases broken.

I'm going to order a connector kit and new bullets from vintageconnections.com after the holidays and replace the damaged ones.  However I'm suspecting an issue with the Ignition Switch.  The "On" position ohms out ok, but not the Park and Also, I'm not getting 12V back to the fuse box when switched to the "On" position.  With the holidays here I'm not going to have much time to tinker till after New Years.

Ordered a new right handlebar control, as it had some damage.   Really thinking of just pulling the whole harness to re-fresh all the connections before chasing my tail too much since there seems to be a lot of corrosion and heat warped plastic.

I'll post some closer pics of the bike in the next day or so.  Looks like it will clean up nice.  Not sparkling, but a good daily rider.

Cheers, Joe

Here's an example of how I hope things clean up.....

Final Drive looks good with a quick wipe down and the 2nd is to prove I actually started working.  You can also see a couple points on the engine I test cleaned to see how much grime there was   :P

Removed and rebuilt/cleaned up the ignition contacts and lubed.  Ignition now works properly and ohms out correctly.

I've pretty much narrowed down the issue to a short to ground in the system.....I've located the suspect cable, which takes 12V from the right handlebar control switch to the gauges through the loom.  So basically 12V is shorted to ground there when the the ignition is turned on.

The short seems to be in the loom somewhere as it is still shorted even with the gauges and controls unplugged (unless I'm completely missing something).  So I think I'll be proceeding with the plan to pull the harness and refresh most of the connectors.  There are some damaged ones anyway.

Unless someone recommends a better place, I'll be placing an order from http://vintageconnections.com/ after the new year.

Cheers, Joe

Yeah..I figured I have at least 3 projects that I could use the crimper for...so might as well pay now and make the added connector kits cheaper later.

Thanks.  Ordered the material from Vintage Connections to re-do ALL the connectors (as needed).  Will be cleaning or replacing every terminal and re-sleeving the loom.

Having all the electrics pulled is going to make the bike easier to clean.  I have to stop myself from going too far and taking too many things off  ::)

Does anyone happen to have a nice color wiring schematic for the '80 GS1000GT?

I traced the Grey Wires which were shorted to chassis and cannot find any breaks in the insulation or an indication of why or where they were shorted to ground.  It may have been the bullet connector at the Tail light but I'm not really sure.  Hopefully after replacing heat warped connectors and bullets will resolve.

You should be able to find it here: http://www.mtsac.edu/%7Ecliff/storage/gs/GS1000.pdf
I am pretty sure that the gray wire is for left or right turn signals. I would have to look to be certain of which side.
I am sure that you will find out in that Factory Service Manual though.  ;)

Yeah...got all the docs from there a while ago, but the quality of the manual scans aren't that great.  Need to look for a proper paper copy eventually.

The gray wire takes 12V to the gauge lights and to the license plate light from the ignition switch.
