Topic: 80' GS1000G - Starting Project back up

Trying not to get excited, but might score this '80 GS1000G on Monday for super cheap....like < $150 cheap.  Clean Title and in mostly running condition.

Belongs to a guy a work and have seen him ride it in a number of times.  He lost interest due to converting to a new Harley.  Was running up to a few weeks ago when he claims he turned the handlebars while it was idling and lost all electrics.  Dead...nothing...so likely a short in the harness.  Has no drive to troubleshoot so just wants out of the garage.  Fingers crossed.

never thought about one of these...if I get it I'll ride and then decide whether to keep or flip.

For sure...I guess once they pay big $$ it's nothing to let the old bike go for nothing just to keep it away from the new shiny thing

Funny this came up because wife just told me that she lost interest in having a bike of her own, so I was now "allowed" to have 4 bikes in the garage

I had one back in the eighties. They're a great bike, bit tall and heavy for some but reliable, fast and bulletproof.

I'd take that in a heartbeat. Those were nice bikes, big, yes, but very reliable. Good luck!

Will find out decision on Monday.  Hopefully it will be in my garage  next week for a closer inspection.

That's a major steal for sure. There is a reason so many of them were used up on the drag strips.

That's a shaft drive, good for touring, not for racing.

Thanks for pointing that out you are correct. Yes the chain drive would def be my first choice but for $150.00 could probably make room for a clean shaftie also.
   One problem buying from friends though is if you sell it and make a bunch of $$'s does it create a problem ? Probably not if you share the wealth a little bit.

Guys just a work colleague..not a friend.  Also, flat out told him I would fix/ride and then possibly sell.....he didn't care either way.  I think he just wants it out of his hair.

This is all assuming he doesn't completely change his mind by Monday.  Wasn't too interested at first as I just dumped a bunch of $$ on an XS750 Rebuild, but the more I read up on the GS1000 models I'm looking forward to playing around with it.

My friend owned a '79 GS 850 and still thinks it was a bike he should never have sold.

Thanks....the paint job looks nice from 5 feet, but may redo at some point.  Was my first attempt at painting.  Next updates will be modified exhaust mounts and a remote oil filter so I don't have to remove the Hooker Exhaust when I change oil.

As mentioned you  cannot go wrong with the Suzi, they really were a great ride.   You may not sell after you get it running well ....Larry

I bought a K5 a couple years ago, came with a crappy, orange peeled, rattle can paint on the tank and side covers.
We block sanded them, shot it with clear and buffedit and it looked great.
That may be an option for you if you dont want to totally repaint them

Sold Picking bike up later this week.  Better price than expected...$100 ...I have a feeling the wife wanted it out of the garage pretty bad.

Thanks...never had a suzuki.  Cant wait to do a closer inspection on everything once it's in my hands.  Hopefully it's just a short in the wiring.

Got to find a GS1000G manual now.

Now all I need is a Kawasaki in the garage and I'll have the big four covered
