SANDCAST ALERT!
« on: December 13, 2013, 10:51:38 PM »
A 1970 cb750/4 is Sandcast... Right?

This one is $2,900 Obo. Shouldn't this be going for way more?

It's not mine and I wish I had the cash. Someone here should grab it and keep it safe.

Craigslist ad is here.

Sandcasts were just the first 7714 or something made.

Just cause it is a K0 does not make it a sandcast, in fact, it is very unlikely.

It's like the first the first 100 units of 2014 Honda Accords are called: superawesomecasts.

Couple years later, someone sees an ad for a 2014 accord and says "superawesomecast, it's a 2014!"

However, there were probably hundreds of thousands of 2014 accords sold.  It would be very unlikely that it is a superawesomecast.

Right on. Thanx for the lesson. I assume the way to tell is by knowing the number son the vin. Ill research it so I can learn the difference.

Thanx man.

Exactly!  69 or 70?  Next thing check the VIN on the frame, then the engine serial.

There are many many sandcast specific parts, even bolts!

Crappy pictures but I think the horn is on the wrong side for the frame to be a Sandie. As for being a K0 there are a lot of stock goodies missing, carbs etc etc. Getting into the bitsa category.

You beat me to it Eric...would have been worth a lot more if those parts were there or at least in storage. Heck, I bet this is a K1 titled as a 1970.

Why is a sandcast so much more valuable than the others? My brother has one since new.

The first 7414 or so CB750 engine cases were made with an older casting method nicknamed "sandcasting". Honda went on to produce hundreds of thousands more CB750 engines afterwards using a "diecasting" method. The first 7414 bikes are therefore very rare and highly valued by collectors. I'm in the midst of restoring my first sandcast now. Other than the casting method and around 100 minor details that only an expert would notice, there is virtually no difference between a 1969 sandcast and a 1970 diecast. But the sandcast is worth several times more!  :P

Cool that you brother still has the sandcast. Can you get us pics, and the serial number.. Approx number is fine  06###
Sandcasts has a lot of early parts that got changed out by the end of the sandcast production.
For example my frame # 572
Had around35-50parts that were not in use by #7500..so they are whole different deal than where the first 1000 are identical with40,000 thr40,999

It wasn't actually "nicknamed" sandcasting, sand casting is a method of casting aluminum using sand funnily enough.... ;D

I'll ask but he's not very forth coming with that kind of info. He's a lazy old fart (62) and getting him to get up and go look at it is like pulling teeth. I asked for pics before and he said he would get them , but never got back to me.

We lived in Ct.when he bought it.
He emailed me and said it was too cold to go out to the shop to get the number (see what I mean), he said he would get it to me tomorrow after noon. I'll see if that happens.

around 1.5  times I would say. Here in old Europe.

10.000 - 15.000  EUR for a godd / very  good K0 diecast
15.000 - 20.000 EUR for a good / very good K0 sandcast

but SEVERAL times more?? Can you find good K0 diecast for 4-5 t$ ? I´ll take three

He disassembled it probably 30 years ago and it sits in boxes as another unfinished project that will probably never get done until his retirement money comes in. He's a semi-retired art director in Hollywood with a nice collection of toys he doesn't have the money to work on because it's been awhile since he worked. He has the 750 as well as a Kawaton, Kawasaki H2 750 in a Norton Manx frame. Has a 1969 Jaguar XKE with the tag "69 PUSSY" , a Ferrari Mondial, 1975 original Dodge D100 van, amd a bunch of Alfa's, and LeBarons and is now looking for a Corvair for a mid engine V8 or Toronado swap. Lives near Willow Springs raceway.

Other than the fact we are 2000 miles apart I would have been there to help him with his projects with him. It not not be until I get them in his will that I get that opportunity and I may be an old man by then and not interested, I'm already 60 myself.

Keep looking, I did and found a nice one. I still need a red left sidecover but it's amazingly original. They're still out there hiding. Mine lived in the back of a bike shop since 96. Me and the owner who passed away apparently were the only ones that knew what it was.

The fact that only you know what it is a good buying point. To others it is just an old rusting Honda of no value. It reminds me of the reality car and bike prospecting shows where the buyer is always trying to get a better deal than it is worth or what the seller should actually get for it. But now and then I see where a seller wants, for example $10K for this rare car that they have no idea what it is or worth and the buyer comes out and says " Oh no, you want $10k but this is clearly worth $40K and I'll gladly give you that." I doubt it. If it was actually worth $50k and the seller was asking $40k the buyer would try and beat them down to $20K.

I had mixed feelings about making an offer on it since the owner passed away. I heard at the last minute there was an auction scheduled and was prepared when it happened. If I hadn't been there it would have sold for a thousand. Another bidder and I fought over it for a while, I assumed he knew what it was but he didn't. I bought another bike from them the next week and paid too much for it, and I told them why I was willing to do that.
