Apparently they are only 20 miles from my brother.

If he's going to do that he could starting with a much cheaper engine and sell the sandcast one to finance everything.  Maybe even come out money ahead.  That way he wouldn't ruin the value of the sandcast engine either.

Well that d pendant on a few things..
We're the cases ever cut for bigbore, and have they been welded?
He said yes the filter mount had been broke, and welded.
I guess as long as nothing shows externally it still will look ok for a restore. I am all for early hot rod engines, but not sacrificing a minty one. I got a set of diecast cases 10,*** that had a 1080 in it makes nor rod break damage.. That will be hotrodded, and I do not have an early frame for it..

We shall see. Decent ones have been selling well I think.

How different are the cases from year to year? I recommend using a different top half case to bore so that the SC can be put back to original if need be. Is there a different year top half that would bolt to a lower? Heck for that matter CB750 cases and motors are not so expensive that I wouldn't try and do the 1000cc build from anything other than a sand cast. He feels that having a 1000cc sand cast would be valuable, but I doubt it would be as valuable as a good restored stock sand cast motor, am I right?

They are machined as a unit. If you mix and match uppers and lowers from different engines the machining will never be correct. Cases are marked for bearing size to maintain clearances.
Has it been done? Probably yes, but that doesn't mean it ever ran well or for very long.

If he's going to do that he could starting with a much cheaper engine and sell the sandcast one to finance everything.  Maybe even come out money ahead.  That way he wouldn't ruin the value of the sandcast engine either.

I see separate case halves on Ebay all the time including a sand cast top half right now for $3000. You're saying that it's basically useless without it's matching half?

That is correct. And...that Seller is dreaming. He always asks at least 4 to 5 times what most stuff sells for. In this case, pardon the pun, that top case is essentially worth $0.

Yup. Think of connecting rods: would you put a cap from one rod onto another, or a main cap from one block to another without line-boring?

$9K for that?    It it worth it??
It's been up for a couple of days and hasn't sold for that price.  Sandcast listings don't go unnoticed for long.  If it hasn't sold yet I think the price is a little high but eventually someone may pay that.

An upper sandcast case has some value,if you want to build a non rider museum piece
Spare the sandcast case, and grab another engine to hotrod

I know it's a hard question to answer but what is a good sand cast motor alone worth?

Depends greatly on the VIN, but a complete motor without chain break damage, the correct cylinders and head should bring $2K-$4K, IMO.

It's #1644. Only damage welded was the oil filter that was rewelded and I'm not sure if any of the repair shows or not.

It's a cool town.  The college girls, and the culinary scene are among the best around ;)

If it was a solid repair that doesn't show, that shouldn't make any difference to the value.

I'm not sure if only half of the cases would be a complete waste. Could you get a second nonmatching case and have the cases line bored? Then you would have to get custom bearings to match the crankshaft.  Expensive but doable.
